A few turns ago, Noble Knight had a copy of the 1971 Hardtack rules listed for several hundred dollars. There are several copies available on eBay at this time (including my own posting).

Have any of these sold and, if so, at what price?

Thanks,

Vince

You do a search on ebay and on the far right is a link to advanced search and you can see sold items. One sold on May 22 2025 for $150. USD

The sound of distant wailing some of you on the Southern Plains may be hearing today is from this Old Duffer who just sold his first print run copy for less than $5.00 USD a few weeks ago.

Oh, and that other sound is the gnashing of teeth….

PS How the hey can any of the rest of us establish the potential value of our old rule sets from the early 70's?

I think Wackmole9 showed us the way. Do an eBay advanced search for the title with the sold items option selected.

Forget what people on ebay ( or Noble Knight)list it for. It only value is what it sold for and how ofen. Old rules is a niche market.

That's easy, TVAG: Value of cheap thing sold goes up 1D6 x 10 once you've sold it. For expensive things--houses, say--value the year following sale is sale price + a percentage die.

I'll be selling old rules for $5 USD a set at Fall In, and painted 28's castings at 4/$5 and never, ever ask what they resold for. If you hang on to everything convinced it's going to be worth a fortune some day, you'll wind up with a basement full of junk, and your heirs will call in a dumpster.

Back when I worked with Lou in 1985, I saw a full box of them on the shelf.

Robert!

Advice well well offered, and well taken.

Mind, I wasn't looking for "max value"--indeed I dumped two filing cabinet drawers of old rules to a Gent who plans to offer them for resale at TwisterCon here in OKC in July, and after his retirement in a couple of years, around the country. He's building a whale of an inventory, including books and board games that already fills his (nice) garage.

And, yes, I did send him a link to this thread….

A caveat on Ebay selling prices. Back when Hasbro bought out Avalon Hill, they were selling off the games in the warehouse at $7.00 USD each. At the same time two idiots on Ebay were in a bidding war for a USED copy of Circus Maximus that finally went for, IIRC, over $200.00 USD!
