Are there any rules of thumb for basing 1:1200 galleys?

Might see what your intended rules suggest.

Ed Smith's old Greek Naval Warfare. I didn't find anything.

You only clear choice is rectangles or squares. Most people put them on rectangles, I did mine in pairs on squares as I'm not really interested in single ships, just multiple squadrons.

Martin and Bill have pretty much said the important parts.

There's never been a dominant rules set for playing with galleys, so there's no de facto basing standard.

Most of the 1/1200 galley models I have don't need bases at all. The oarbanks are nearly always cast as a single piece with the hulls and are are really robust. If you don't need to add something to the model – labels, magnets, wakes, a space to place markers that moves with the ship, etc. – you could consider not basing them. Providing corners and a straight edge is nice for measuring, but bases also insert a distance between the ram and the enemy hull, which looks funny in ramming situations.

I use 20 x 40mm or 20 x 60mm metal bases for my ships mainly for transport in magnetic boxes. Labels would be nice but I haven't gotten that far. So far we have the poleis of Krapopolis, Dwebes and Beuboia fighting.

As Yellow Admiral suggests you can skip bases altogether if you have sturdy models like those made by Navwar. However, even with those if you want to protect a paint job you may want to put your galleys on a base. I use the deeper 3mm rectangular bases from Litko and find that they provide a good grip that saves wear and tear on the models. Litko makes a full range of sizes you can use.

Having used magnets/metal this way:

… I can use the ships without bases or change the base size as needed.
