In the videos, there are black canvas barriers affixed to the base of the 8 inch gun tubes, where they enter the gun house. What are those barriers called? I have seen them called "blast bags," however, when I used that term with a veteran who served as a gunnery officer on the USS OKLAHOMA CITY, he looked at me as if I had sprung horns or something. Perhaps the barriers were not used on the 6 inch guns of the light cruisers, however, war-time photos and video show the barriers used with 5 inch guns. |

I can't remember there proper term but they are there primarily to block weather and sea phenomena from entering the turret. |
