Was there a book published recently naming French officer casualties, by regiment, for the Waterloo campaign? I had an idea that the author was Paul Dawson, but I cannot find anything by him that fits the bill.

If I'm mistaken, where would one obtain such information? I'm assuming the French army records at Vincennes? Would they have the equivalents of the British "Company Muster Rolls" that would list officers and NCOs?

Any help appreciated.

Yes, it's Waterloo Casualties by Paul Dawson, I have a copy.

This information is available online.

Martinien, A, Tableaux par Corps et par Batailles des Officiers tues et blesse pendant les guerres de l'Empire 1805-1815, Paris, 1899.

There are two volumes. The first volume includes a supplement at the end of the volume. A separate volume completes the record.

Kind regards
Allan

A link to the first volume.

Just in case anyone (like me) was baffled at the negligible officer casualties in the Prince's links, only to then notice they were supplementary volumes.

Thanks for all the replies (none of the links seem to work for me for some reason, I'll try again tomorrow). It looks like the Dawson book is a "must-buy". A last question, where does the book list the officer casualties by regiment (eg in the appendices)? I've looked through an on-line copy (restricted number of pages), but couldn't see where or how the losses were listed.

Just for everyone's information, I'm trying to put together a set of Sharp Practice forces for Quatre Bras and Waterloo based on the exploits of the Black Brunswickers. I have managed to collate a roster of specific French units that opposed them on both battlefields, but need the names of French regimental officers and senior NCOs (a contact in Germany has very kindly supplied the same for the Brunswickers).

Hence my earlier question – do the French army records at Vincennes contain the equivalent of Company Muster Rolls found in the National Archives at Kew, London?

Paul Dawson has a lot to answer for! his Waterloo casualties was on sale so I ordered one, then ordered 4 more of his books, now I seem to be back into Napoleonics! Napoleon and Grouchy is my favourite of his books so far.

I have both physical books of Martinien (& pencilled corrections) and also a spreadsheet with contents & corrections, additions etc

Now I'm looking at mapping the area of the 100 days using Ferrari and campaign cartographer.

Dawsons' books has small tables and example soldiers but all scattered through his books, so hard to find the information

I think you would be interested in his Ney & Quatre bras book.

oh and what happened to the original napoleon series forum?

von Winterfeldt31 May 2025 11:17 p.m. PST

for officers losses you must look at Martinien, for more – rank and file for Dawson, you could also have a look at napoleon-online.de – where Markus Stein already listed officers casualties using Martinien for specific battles.

Nap series org is replaced by Napoleonic Wars forum, great to see you again Graf Bretlach.
