As the skirmish/RPG fantasy and SF projects continue, I'm looking at names, places and well-described or well-shown bars/casinos/taverns/whatever. Places to stop for an evening and be approached by a mysterious stranger, or a debt collector. There's Cloud City, the Mos Eisley Cantina--is that really what they call the place?--from Star Wars original trilogy, The Spaceman's Rest in Righa, the New Chicago in Lakkmandarol, (CL. Moore's Northwest Smith for both) Madame Kan's in a Low Canal town (Brackett's Sword of Rhannon), Time Considered… in Stirling's Court of the Crimson Kings, the Green Dragon and the Prancing Pony (LOTR.)

How many can you name and source?

Not sure if you're only interested in SF/F, but an interdimensional bar-hopper might visit Rick's in Casablanca and then gamble with Falstaff at the Boars' Head in Eastcheap.

How about the restaurant at the end of the universe? After all it is nearly Towel day.

There is also the Friendly Arm Inn or Elfsong Tavern from Baldur's Gate. Fandom.com has more from the BG series

Vulgar Unicorn.

Eumelus Supporting Member of TMP18 May 2025 6:22 p.m. PST

oh, and Ten Forward.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP18 May 2025 7:22 p.m. PST

Good ones! I'd completely forgotten the Vulgar Unicorn, and have no video game connection.

I'd rank Ten Forward with the Pigs Bar in Time Police HQ. Yes, you can go on adventures starting from there, but instead of beautiful women or mysterious strangers promising fortune and glory, it's a boss hinting at a better efficiency report. Lacks something.

Rick's in Casablanca is a nice one. Even without a paratime machine, you could visit Shepherd's in Cairo and the Raffles in Singapore. Oh. And Marion Ravenwood's bar in Tibet. No doubt there was something equivalent in Johannesburg?

And I do not recommend gambling with Falstaff. Like Rotten Luck Willie, you couldn't beat him with five aces.

Did the place in Firewalker even have a name?

Munden's Cross Time Saloon from GrimJack.

Giles the Zog19 May 2025 1:28 a.m. PST

The Silver Eel, and The Golden Lamprey
(Lankhmar)

Giles the Zog19 May 2025 1:32 a.m. PST

For Zombie/post apocalypse, you of course have
"The Winchester"

Odo's in ST:DS9, I don't think it has a name ?

Milliways was the Restraunt At the End of the Universe

The Mother Black Cap
The Crow
(Withnail & I)

Of course, for Vampires, there is The Bronze.

Eumelus Supporting Member of TMP19 May 2025 3:16 a.m. PST

The bar in DS9 was Quark's (Odo was the constable who was always trying to shut it down), and yes if one is looking for the sort of place to meet unsavory strangers, get job offers with no Imperial entanglements, or pick up the sort of gal that Mom said to leave alone, then Quark's would be a better Star Trek choice than 10 Forward.

The Mended Drum in Terry Pratchett's Discworld

@Eumelus
Doh Quark's indeed. :-)
Of course Morn himself also had some shady secrets
(Who Mourns for Morn ?)

The Hobbits Armpit – Thrud.

And I should have thought of the Long Branch in Dodge City, which was both a real life and a fictional adventurer's bar.

My mistake: Blue Time…in Zar-to-Kan. Better described than most, and actually enhances story and plot by the description.

Been too long since I visited Lankhmar, and I'm visiting the grandkids. Fortunately==bragging rights!--my son had six volumes of Fafhrd & the Mouser on his shelves.

The Floating Vagabond. From the RPG Tales from the Floating Vagabond, Inter-Planar-Extra-Dimensional bar. RPG has some some great Jim Halloway illustrations…

The Three Feathers in the Warhammer world. Introduced in a WFRP article in White Dwarf 94 it includes a floor plan of the inn, a cast of characters, various subplots etc.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP20 May 2025 11:16 a.m. PST

Thank you all, Citizen Sade especially! A search for White Dwarf 94 will begin as soon as I'm back at home station.

You're welcome. The author, Graeme Davis, blogged about it: link
I recommend following the link in his article to The Realm of Chaos 80s blog too.
