Form reading online, ratings are sometimes suggested to not reflect modern viewing.

Perhaps the fact the classic series slaughters the modern tat in the ratings is the reason for this thinking?

Either way, what other measures can we use?

For example around David Tennant and a little either side, there seemed a slew of merchandise.

I don't see much these days.

Are there any partworks? As there were figures, cards, at least around be DT.

Action figures, like wise.

There were not-Lego, t-shirts, books, posters, kitchen paraphernalia, so on, around DTs run.

I'm certainly not suggesting DTs run is good Dr Who, but it was perhaps the biggest time for merchandise, that seems to have vanished.

Are there constant articles in magazines? And other non fan content? On the tv perhaps.

Are fan Clubs popping up and being supported?

Do kids dress up like the characters for Halloween and parties?

Were the last three endlessly interviewed?

Does everyone's favourite noodle slurper have big TV roles set up for her?

Anyone have any non ratings equivalents to the classics, or even earlier modern tat, that show a difference to that and or the more recent ultra modern tat?

I'm confident the show is failing in more ways than just ratings.

It'll be back. They still haven't checked off the "Doctor Who is a furry"* box yet. Have to be inclusive, y'know… ;-)

* My guess is as either a hare or a hedgehog

A dog. Like inspector rex.

But, if not ratings, what are you basing that on?

Dr. Who ended several iterations ago.

I heard it was breaking ratings records with each new episode. Problem is, it's in the wrong direction. As far as the merchandising goes, has anyone ever produced a Captain Smith (of the Titanic) action figure?

Well there's an episode Tomorrow at the Eurovision in space….with Graham Norton and Ryan in a genuine (apparently) sub-plot.

Coolio.

Better chance if Tom Baker returns!

I would really love to see Bill Nighy as the doctor, just to hear him say "I'm (long pause) the doctor".

Yeah, but only if Marvin cameos as a companion.

"Captain Smith (of the Titanic) action figure?"

That one?

Besides, titanic had huge ratings that aren't questioned.

" at the Eurovision"

Likely the only place that will have them.., wonder why?

Australias sending two blokes, one dress, guess equal opportunity isn't cool any more.

Preferred when we got the old English guys solo humour.

Tom Baker is 91…maybe another cameo…but return as the doctor….

…nope

Think about it…

I doubt you can point to the level of merchandising as evidence one way or the other or used as a barometer to measure success generally.
There was as you say a great deal in the first half of DT's run but it stopped. That would have been in 2007. Too long ago for that to have any bearing on the present position.
I think a lot of what was on sale was slanted more towards collectables than childrens toys, and I suspect things like that can still be found just not in the toy stores. Ive not been into Forbidden Planet for a long time.

There were other peaks such as Dalekmania in the early 60's though that was only for a couple of years. And when that bubble burst the show kept going regardless.
There was a huge outpouring of novels and collectables in the 90's when the show wasn't even on the telly at all 1996 excepted.
It comes down to commercial decisions. Quite simply WE DONT KNOW

There has been a lot of speculation as to whether Disney wants out, and if so will the BBC go on without them. Who knows, there may be a hiatus, unless these commercial and funding matters are clearer.

Im not going to attempt to persuade anyone else whether they should like or dislike the show. That's a personal choice. Life's too short! Just emphasing we cant and wont know.

When Doctor Who was cancelled after 1989, it took me ages for the penny to drop and I only found out by seeing a reference to that in the introduction to a Virgin New Adventures novel. Pre internet, you see. This time, Ill find out from You Tube in seconds…

As far as pop SciFi tv and film, popularity and success equals merchandise.

Star wars is a good example, popular with lots of merch.

LOTR, of course.

There was a lot of toys in the 2000s, among many other random items for Dr Who.

If it were really popular today you would know about it.

I've seen nothing of it since the new dr reveal news. Not even any ads on TV. Seen nothing obvious in shops. Used to be you couldn't get away from it, dwindled during Capaldi, now nothing I've seen.

Next regeneration… A doorknob!
