Can anyone tell me what style of flock is used in this video and where I can get it? It's a painting tutorial, but he shows the flocked base at the very beginning. Later on, he describes it as "old railway style flock", but I'm having no luck googling that.

Thanks

Possibly Busch or Noch. If you ask in the comments on the vid, he could probably tell you which brand he likes.

I have a bunch of it from the 70s/80s in my flocking supplies, but no memory of what the brand was, probably Lifelike.

Go to a model railway shop they'll have loads of different bags of it, especially railway ballast (grey ish stones)

"Ancient jar of flock" may refer to dyed sawdust used before the age of static grass.

No. Watching the vid, it's clearly a leafy type of flock that came between the hand-dyed sawdust and the new-fangled static. It's like the little packets of flock grass that came with Nitto diorama kits.

As I recall:
The Nitto kits was mostly static grass fibers.
This looks very much like Noch as sold in the 70s and 80s.
Little flakes with a few fibers.

Did some looking about, what Noch sells as "flock" now is ground foam, like Woodland Scenic.

However, look at "Noch Foliage Set" this is like small leaf material:

There are many small name suppliers to the model rail community. I know some are stained saw dust (like the ancient Life-Like) but not in that bizarre blue-green.

I could not help but look more.

Here is one source, many good colors and mixes:

And of course, a DIY video.
As a side note for finer grind of wood, ask for "wood flour"

Ground cork was also used for railway modelling and dioramas back in the day. More stable than sawdust and took colouring well.
