All,

Greetings, come on in and take a look at my doggies for World War Two. These guys are mostly plastic multi-pose figures from Warlord Games, though there are some Warlord and Artizan metals mixed in for the weapons teams. They're nice figures overall, if a little boring, with nicely sculpted weapons, faces, helmets, and gear, with a nice spread of weapons, though not enough M-1 Garands for my liking, could have done without the shotgun, didn't appreciate the fact you can't really get the BAR into a firing position, and there is an arm for throwing a grenade but it looks kind of wonky to me. Sorry, don't mean to sound too down on them, they're still good to go as a force on the tabletop.

I've got a platoon+ of riflemen, plus a bevy of support weapons: three bazooka teams, two MG teams, two mortar teams, two ATG teams, and a flamethrower team. So plenty of troops to handle whatever nastiness the bad guys might throw at us. On a side note, these guys are cool for North Africa, Italy, and NWE, but I also find myself wanting an Army force for the Pacific, but these just don't work for me, and I can't seem to find any models that match what's in my mind's eye. If you've got any ideas (on figures I can purchase, NOT on how to spend the rest of my life modifying current figures with Green Stuff!), please let me know.

picture

We've got a Captain on the right and a Doc on the left. Yeah, I tried to spruce up my basic paintjob with some decals, consisting of rank, national ensign, and divisional patch (would have preferred 3rd Infantry Division, but The Big Red One ain't so bad, and was what I had on hand).

picture

A couple NCOs with submachine guns, Grease Gun on the left and Tommy Gun on the right.

picture

A couple doggies with M-1 Carbines; look at the five o'clock shadow on Big Sarge (left)! ;)

picture

A couple PFCs with Browning Automatic Rifles (BARs).

A couple soldiers with M-1 Garands.

And they're you have it, my US Army force for kicking Nazi butt. I've got a bunch of vehicles for these guys, too, will post them separately. Despite my gripes, I'm very happy with them and looking forward to getting them on the tabletop. Someday… Still painting and still have lots of troops left to post, but we're getting closer to the finish line.

V/R,
Jack

You've done a great job with them.

Korvessa11 May 2025 10:21 p.m. PST

Very nice.
I had the same complaint about my Warlord Soviets and Germans – not enough rifles.

Very nice mate.

Great work! Thanks for sharing.

Hey, thanks everyone, I really appreciate it, glad you like them! If you like these, just wait til you see the Marines ;)

Korvessa – Yeah, it's kind of a pain. We all like SMGs and such, but shotguns, in WW2, in the ETO?? It's funny, I have the opposite problem with my Soviets; I bought them painted from a gentleman on eBay, and they're very nice, but he only built DP LMGs and rifles, not a single PPsh-41! I had to go buy some 3D printed SMG gunners to fill them out.

Jack

I bought a Soviet winter box that was mispacked (everyone in Summer uniforms, even though the box was correct). They sent me a replacement and didn't ask that I return the mispacked ones.
So now I have lots of everything: rifles, SMG and LMG

Just Jack13 May 2025 6:41 a.m. PST

Well hot damn, that worked out like a champ! Those older plastics, with the weapons not molded into the hands/arms, were quite a pain, you did a great job.

Jack

Damn Jack, it's been years and it seems like I'm still following you. You were small scale when I was and now you're playing with the 28mm toys… I'm just getting into them too! LOL! For me its becoming an eye sight thing.

I do see that you have decent taste there, for a Marine anyway. Big Red One! If you're gonna be one then be a Big Red One! Danger Forward! Hooah! (Yeah, I'm a BRO).

BTW- there are early WWII models out there by Company B miniatures if you're wanting to go back to the Pacific. Brodie helmets and even some guys with Garands.

Just Jack13 May 2025 1:54 p.m. PST

Hey man, glad to hear from you, it's been awhile! Yeah, tell me about it, the eyesight is killing me! I've been a fan of The Big Red One ever since the movie with Lee Marvin and Luke Skywalker ;)

That's interesting, I'll have to check out Company B. I do have a fantasy about doing an alt-history fight in the Philippines but that's not what I'm looking for right now, I'm looking for M-1 helmets and M-1 Garands, no leggings, no packs, sleeves rolled up, for New Guinea.

V/R,
Jack

Hey Jack,

I'm right behind you on that too! I have the Japanese and the Aussies too (I snagged some Warlord Australian milita types for the 39th Battalion). I also grabbed some Perry Brothers US and they look about right. A great price too.

link

They are easy enough to find in the US too. 42 models plus grenade launchers, handy talkies,Springfields, and M1919s. That's for the same price as the Warlord Minis. Only thing is that they give you these tiny round bases which are pretty meh.

Still have the gaiters though. Good luck finding those dress down guys. Heck, good luck finding any GI's who aren't right off the boat from the states!

Just Jack13 May 2025 7:26 p.m. PST

Awesome man, I'd love to see what you've got for the Pacific!

Yeah, I've had my eye on those Perry GIs; not perfect, but not too bad either, and a great price point (it would be incredibly expensive but they even have metals with sleeves up). The biggest thing that's held me back is I've read they don't go together well, that there are significant gaps in the models, I.e., the arms don't fit great on the torsos and leave unseemly gaps. Did you have any problems with that?

I can get past the leggings, but you hit the nail on the head, I don't want the "straight off the boat"-looking guys, with their uniforms and gear perfect.

V/R,
Jack

If you don't mind the 3D printed thing, Studio Historia does some really good early war Marines and Army stuff in their Guadalcanal range (and you can buy them pre-printed). I believe they are doing the later war figures in the near future. And, they also do some really good Japanese figures.

I don't know why people are so damn set on shotguns. The ONLY guys getting them were MP units for riot or POW Escort duty. But gamers think they are sexy, so sets must have them – history be damned.

Without knowing the Bolt Action rules that well, did they turn the shotgun into some kind of super weapon, which has some people building to points lists rather than reality?

Just Jack14 May 2025 11:43 a.m. PST

Jon – Thanks for the link, some cool stuff in there! And yes, no idea why the shotguns are so cool, not even used by Army line units (and exaggerated even amongst Marines in the Pacific).

79th – Not sure, but I don't think so. I've got the 3rd Edition rules, I'll have to take a look.

@Just Jack: No, I haven't put them together yet, but I'll throw a few together today since I'm building. Perry boys do good work, so I'm surprised that there's an issue. I'll chine in after I build a few.

Right now my Pacific is Early US from B Company, a M3 75mm SPM, a pair of M3 Lights, a Type 95 tank, and a couple of Japanese boxed sets. I also have 4 Militia squads, a box of Commonwealth troops, and an 8th Army Starter army. I was going to build up a mix that could be used for Kokoda and maybe Singapore while I'm at it. Lot's of work to do, but I have all summer to do them! LOL!

GReg BRad16 May 2025 4:05 a.m. PST

Well done great work.
You are the first to paint the pants green.
Warlord now need the set with brown trousers, cutting the pockets off does not work that well.

Just Jack17 May 2025 8:17 a.m. PST

Tgunner – Sounds awesome man, now hurry up!!! ;)

Greg Brad – Thanks, I appreciate it! I'm not going to lie, I tried painting the trousers brown, but as you mentioned, it just didn't look right with the pockets so I painted them green. There's no way I was shaving off pockets!

Jack

I just put together one of the Perry US Infantry- yeah, a royal pain. I'm not sure if it's the glue I'm using or what, but that guy just wouldn't stay together and fit will. I fiddled and fiddled and finally got him together. He does look good and does have his basic gear molded on him, so no sprue hunting for that stuff. But.. I assembled x5 Warlord Japanese in the time it took me to piece together that one GI. Not looking good there.

I'll have my early Doughboys painted up by the end of the week though with a Japanese opfor to play with. Should be a great way for me to ring in the new edition.

Just Jack17 May 2025 5:23 p.m. PST

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that about the Perry US Infantry. And no kidding, the Warlord Japanese go together in a snap, some of the easiest to build I've run into (the US Infantry wasn't bad at all, but the Afrika Korps and Fallschirmjager practically slide together).

Man, I'm green with envy on the early war stuff for the Philippines. Like I said, I'd love to do an alt-history where the US actually defended and reinforced the Philippines, maybe even went a little earlier, so I can paint F4F Wildcats with yellow wings ;) In any case, play out a whole grand campaign with landings and counterlandings all over the Philippines.

Tomorrow night I'm going to blow your socks off with my Leathernecks! ;)

V/R,
Jack
