"Finnish WWII books and their films" Topic

I couldn't put the full title I wanted to use in the subject bar
Talvisota (Winter War) and Tuntematon Sotilas (Unknown Solider) books & films.

I have the films and have seen them (English subtitles) both several times. I think they are both very good.
The WWII 28mm skirmish rules I use have a bit of a role-playing aspect to them. Because I like the movies, and have a Finnish army, I use the names of most of the characters for my skirmish figures.
Recently, I thought I would get the books, hoping they would help flesh out the characters a bit. Both films appear to me to be pretty faithful adaptions of the books. But after that they differ.
The Talvisota book (English translation anyway) only rarely names characters, just a couple of commanding officers and the narrator's brother and half-brother. There are times when you can recognize scenes from the book in the films, but the narrator will just give their positions (squad leader, platoon leader, etc.) – never the actual names. I presume the names they used in the movie are just made up.
Tuntematon Sotilas is just the opposite. Here the author almost always uses the names. The film uses the same names as the book. There are also more character descriptions in this book. I should mention that this book deals with the Continuation War (41-44), not the Winter War. But many of the characters served in both.
So if you looking for inspiration for your WWII Finnish skirmish characters, Tuntematon Sotilas is what you want.

Yes many foreign films are available here on YouTube, saw both Finnish films and watch a lot of Russian movies even without subtitles or dubbing.

Looks like yes. I haven't watched it yet though to see how good the translation is.
