So upon completing my painting of the 23rd Regiment of Foot, I decided I wanted them to be wearing knapsacks and rolls. I made the regiment from Perry metals and none of them have knapsacks or rolls sculpted onto them.

I had plenty of leftover rolls from the Perry plastic boxed sets.

However, the supply of knapsacks on the plastic sprues is limited and I ran out after using them on other regiments.

First thought was to get the knapsack bits second-hand off of Ebay or some other similar place. But after some quick searching I realized that it was way too specific and way too niche of a thing that some seller out there would be specifically selling a ziploc bag of tiny knapsacks.

Also came up empty on resin or 3D printed bits companies selling 18th Century knapsacks in a pack, or historical knapsacks of any period. There's lots of 3D printed 28mm knapsacks on Etsy, but they are mostly designed for 40k or fantasy models, etc.

But I suddenly realized something and felt rather silly. In 28mm scale, all an AWI knapsack really is is a slightly puffy square!

So I got out the green putty and cut them out like I was making tiny cookies, lol. I actually cut elongated rectangles and then folded them in half and squished them a bit to get that "two halves" look.

Then I painted them up in an appropriate shade of red and then painted the 23rd's plume emblem on them over a small circular field of blue.

I copied the design from Giles Allison's blog.

They'll do the job I think!

They look like knapsacks to me.
Great job.

Don't you also derive much greater satisfaction from having done it yourself?
I find getting creative like this to make something that isn't commercially available really lifts my enjoyment of the hobby and fondness for my troops.

I think they look fantastic!

Thanks Giles, much appreciated! I've been a huge fan of your blog going all the way back to 2007. Your AWI armies were the primary inspiration for me to get my own AWI project started. Can't believe it's been nearly 20 years!!

"Can't believe it's been nearly 20 years!!"

No, me neither! And I've now started filling in the blanks in my collection, so much more AWI to come.

Looking forward to it Giles! One thing from your blog of particular interest to me are those wonderful scratch-built AWI buildings you have. No longer being produced as far as I know? Were they built by special order?

I do have some experience with foam core and balsa, I might try my hand at building them from scratch, particularly the Neilson house and out-building from Saratoga. Absolutely beautiful models.

One advantage is that 18th Century architecture is very boxy, lots of straight lines so it makes construction somewhat easier!

Hi – sorry, only just seen this post. The buildings were largely made to order by Tablescape; see here: link

I'm not sure if they still take commissions – this was pretty early in their career, I think.

Hey Giles, oh my gosh no worries!

Yeah, unfortunately it appears he no longer does AWI or any North American buildings.

You must have had those made at least 15 years ago if I remember your blog timeline accurately.
