Just played a small winter East Front game using I Ain't Been Shot Mum rules with lend lease and light tanks This scenario is based upon the Dec 2, 1941 Soviet counterattack on the leading edge of the German drive towards Moscow. The German 258 Inf Div had punched through the Russian 222 Rifle Div and was only 27 miles west of the capital.. At this point, with the weather down to -30C, the Russians launched an attack at the point of the German spear, Meanwhile tanks of the 136th and 140th Tk Bttns came in from the Southeast to cut off the Germans. This is the basis of this game. Lnk to the flickr site with an AAR Be sure to click on the picture for full description. link

Find an AAR from Mark L and you know you're going to have a great read! First off … it is not just T-34s vs. Panthers on a bowling green with a bucket of dice. The table looks fantastic. The scenario is so well constructed. The game flow is very impressive. It has the ring of historical accuracy to it. Unit types and events I so often find in first-hand accounts of early war winter battles. Defenders caught by a counter attack without their forces in place, feeding in their "alarm detachment" reinforcements as they can reach the battle. Units in Lend Lease tanks that have not had enough time to become confident in their mounts, which only advance with a fair bit of hesitation. Soviet tankers running over AT guns because their direct fire is not effective enough. Landsers pinning the Red Army infantry, so that the tanks get ahead of their infantry support, and wind up getting taken out one-by-one by infantry tank-hunting teams with bundle charges. All in all, another great report. Thanks for posting it! -The other Mark (aka: Mk 1) |
