The narrative of ancient tribes around the world regularly using ayahuasca and magic mushrooms in healing practices is a popular one. Is it true?

Interesting. This deserves a lot of thought.

I'm surprised the writer didn't mention ancient Greece -- "The Road to Eleusis" (1978) by R. Gordon Wasson, Carl A.P. Ruck, and Albert Hofmann discusses how ergot fungus on wheat, rye, and barley and the psychoactive effects it would produce -- similar to psilocybin mushrooms -- might have played a key role in the "mystery" rites of Demeter at her temple at Eleusis for centuries.
