"In July-August 1945, the French Ministry of National Economy and Finance was engaged in an important task – compiling a balance sheet of damage during the war years. The results of this research were published as a separate publication, Inventaire des ressources de l'économie française (Paris, 1946), printed in December 1945.


Still, how quickly French accounting calculated everything! A fairly detailed description of the state of the French economy at the end of 1945 compared with 1938 was compiled. In particular, they calculated the demographic losses of France during the war years. The excess of mortality over the usual level during the war years was determined to be 520 thousand people, mainly in 1939-1941. There were 310 thousand killed, including 150 thousand soldiers and officers, 120 thousand civilians, and 40 thousand people were executed separately by the Germans. 200 thousand people died in Germany. In total, France lost 1030 thousand people (p. 7)…"
