Looking for recomendations for in depth books (like Shatterd Sword is for Midway) on the Battle of Savo Island. |

I'm not aware of any monographs on Savo Island since the battle was, what 30 minutes? Neptune's Inferno by Hornfischer covers Savo pretty well in a fair amount of detail as does Rich Franks' Guadalcanal |

"Neptune's Inferno" by Hornfischer. Maybe the best book on the naval part of the Guadalcanal campaign. |

Also want to recommend Neptune's Inferno. It's a very solid book on the naval portion of the Guadalcanal campaign. |

Another plug for Neptune's Inferno. To do the two-part Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (November 13 & 15, 1942), I ended up using Neptune's Inferno almost exclusively. I ran it as a series of 5 games, 3 air and 2 naval. The information on the air battles was a bit thin, but good enough to make scenarios; the information on the naval contests was more than enough for generating historical scenarios and plausible "what ifs". Excellent book. - Ix |

S.E. Morison; History of United States Naval Operations in World War II; Volume V ("The Struggle for Guadalcanal"). IMHO the Loxton book, while interesting, is not entirely objective. Of course, the same could be said of Morison, who was apparently a pal of Admiral Turner, and inserted Turner's interpretations (and excuses) regarding the battle in his books. The Lundstrom book, "Black Shoe Carrier Admiral" also discusses Savo, mostly in a chapter entitled "The Savo Disaster". Lundstrom is more objective than either of the 2 authors mentioned above, and the book is also much more recent, published in 2006. MH |
