… as in literally "petrified."

Gist is that post-Soviet forces supposedly shot down a flying saucer in Ukraine in 1993, and the occupants set off an explosive weapon that literally turned observing soldiers into "limestone" (calcium carbonate).

It's apparently an old story from 2000, when the CIA report was declassified. But I'd never heard of it before.

I call bunk on it. Either the (former) KGB were having a laugh and/or exposing a mole, or whatever was being reported was code for other things, or everybody involved was stoned in another way. :-P

But what the hey? Now we have a new weapon idea for LGM vs. Earth games! Post-Soviet defense forces encounter UFO and all heck breaks loose!

If it leads to a gaming scenario, S'all good, Man!

You know, if as a Soviet officer you wanted to cover up a colossal screw-up this would be a great way to do so

hmmm, probably a story that should be taken with a pillar of salt… ;-)

Given their performance in the last few years, I doubt that they'd have any success against anything of a really high technological level. It's more likely that the UFO had landed on its own, maybe for repairs, when the army rolled up.

I think this all a problem with translation.

Russians are stereotypically stone faced. The problem probably lies with some aliens attempting an illegal entry into the USSR & being met by the typical stone-faced officials.

" being met by the typical stone-faced officials"

The aliens had the same problem when they landed on Easter Island… ;-)
