"In the late 1930s the Dutch clung to the hope that in any conflict between the Great Powers in Europe, they would be able to remain neutral as in WW1. As a result they were slow to increase their defense expenditure, also fearing to provoke their German neighbour. The German invasion of Denmark and Norway shattered any illusions they had but too late to do much about it. Their strategy depended upon ceding territory and retreating into Vesting (Fortress) Holland behind their country's many formidable watercourses. As the Allies were to find in 1944 Holland is difficult terrain over which to advance but adequate defensive preparations and resources are still essential and the Dutch had neither, nor were they alert to the potential of airborne forces. The Germans planned to use such troops in a series of coups de main to seize key objectives. Our battle is based on one of these the Moerdijk road and rail bridges over the formidable stretch of water known as Hollands Diep south east of of Rotterdam, and also the airfield of Waalhaven…"
