Looks pretty good next to Age of Eagles at 11% and Blucher at 3%.

GeoHex was ubiquitous in the 80s. grin

The "clips" just chew the edges up. Then they get lost.
The pieces just slide apart too easily.

Other than that…

"GeoHex was ubiquitous in the 80s."

Meaning the number might have been 35-40% then. About the only things you can poll on TMP about wargamer use and actually break 50% would be tapes, rulers, dice and miniatures. For everything else, your headline will always be "You don't use/play X."

I do still have a Geo-Hex set, though. In fact I added 40+ pieces out of the SYWA Convention flea market last weekend. Down to a certain level, it will give you whatever shape of board you need. But I have a house and a garage. If I ever have to move out nearer the kids, the mats will accompany me, but not the rest of the set.

Oh. The clips are easily replaced out of sheet styrene. I did a batch this afternoon. They won't chew anything up if used carefully. Yes, there's often damage to edges. You should have seen that set I just picked up. As with castings and every other type of terrain, you check after a game and make repairs. Goes with a hobby in which people handle things constantly.

I put mine on a turfed mat or felt. no real issues with sliding.

+1 to that…

The clips are easily replaced out of sheet styrene

…and this.

I am bemused by the fact that placing the hexes on felt and making replacement styrene tabs out of…styrene…escape someone who has used the product.

It's interesting how listing reasons I do not like a product is somehow construed as a moral failure. 👍
I also didn't list how I don't like ….
Oh, why bother? 🙄🤷
Obviously I'm a villain for not liking Geo-Hex.

My set was a used set, given to me. I like other terrain better. 🙄

I never saw much geohex over here in the UK, but the Hexon tiles from Kalllistra seem fairly common. I use mine all the time. I just use a non slip mat instead of the clips.

I have no idea of your villainy level, OFM, nor do I regard use of Geo-Hex as a moral issue. But if someone wrote "I don't drive cars because they run out of fuel" you'd expect a discussion of fuel gauges and service stations to follow.

I don't like psychics either. They can't predict the weekly NFL games for squat.

Nor do I like broccoli or red beets.

Nor do I like "modern Country Music".

I had Geohex. Plain for micro armor and grid for Battletech.

It was too thin to be effective for 25mm and was out of fashion by the early 90s

I haven't played anything recently, but when I do I almost always use some Geo-Hex. I've never used the triangle clips.

I added a 4" hex pattern on top of mine using dots of green and brown markers. Just because sometimes I liked playing games where you just pick up the and miniatures and put 'em down without as much care. It felt more like playing with toys.

I don't like peas, or spiders, or flying.

I liked that I could shape the whole landscape with Geo-Hex, not just put a lumpy hill somewhere. But I'll admit it is a lot of work. And storage. But that's because I bought a lot. I have had trouble using the mountainscape stuff, though I made custom transition pieces to go from mountain to the rough hill pieces (the 1-level step shapes).

Valmy9208 Apr 2025 2:20 p.m. PST

I still use it, still like it, enough that I bought more new in the last couple of years. Mostly playing in 15mm. Agree it's a little thin for 25s.

I liked the hills. Easy to define edges and crests. Nobody could argue about the "envelope hills" (bar one pillock).

The base layer of hexes took too much time for me. Eventually I sold the lot for what I'd paid three years before.

Have fun.

I have been using GHQ Terrain Maker for years and have enjoyed the product. I don't mind doing the sculpting, painting and flocking myself.

To prevent sliding, I use a large felt mat underneath. This keeps slippage to a minimum.

I have never used Geo-Hex but it was pretty innovative in its day.

TimePortal10 Apr 2025 8:40 p.m. PST

Used it back n the 1980-90s but not anymore.
