We all have our favourites – mine is the last one, Jodie Whittaker who brought new life to the production. The Doctors: The 1st Doctor William Hartnell
The 2nd Doctor Patrick Troughton The 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee The 4th Doctor Tom Baker The 5th Doctor Peter Davison The 6th Doctor Colin Baker The 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy The 8th Doctor Paul McGann The War Doctor John Hurt The 9th Doctor Christopher Eccleston The 10th Doctor (first re-generation) David Tennant The 10th Doctor (second re-generation) David Tennant The 11th Doctor Matt Smith The 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi The 13th Doctor Jodie Whittaker |

The 4th Doctor followed closely by the 10th Doctor. |

David Tennant, with Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker extremely close seconds. |

Not my favorite but to complete the list don't we need Ncuti Gatwa. During Jodies time we have the Fugitive Dr Who Jo Martin as well |
BillyNM | 04 Apr 2025 6:02 a.m. PST |
For me they all bring something differnet to the role although I never saw many of Sylvester McCoy and none of Peter Davison. The latest (not on the list?), Ncuti Gatwa, is really good, his personality just pops off the screen, but he's ill-served by some truly awful stories. That said, I always disliked David Tennant who who made me give up on the programme until he left, possibly only eclipsed in dreadfulness by Jodie Whittaker. I rejoined for her reincarnation, imagine how appalled I was when DT reappeared… |

It used to be #3 Jon Pertwee, until someone told me he had been cocking his leg-over Katy Manning (Jo Grant). #10 is known as "Tony Blair Doctor Who" in my house – he was everywhere all-at-once collecting the silver-framed pictures for his piano-top. Best episode for Tennant was Blink Wiki – Dr Who S3 E10 2007 (he wasn't in it very much). |

Blink is one of the greatest episodes from Dr Who ever. I thought I didn't like Tennant for a while then realised I didn't like Rose and Mickey. Or Donna. Poor Jo Grant – in those days actors got typecast and she struggled after leaving Who. I really like Pertwee on original viewings, much later I found him rather over the top and over reliant on gadgets. Had some great stories though. I like McCoy's untrustworthy and manipulative version, and it was the first time we got interlinked stories giving a season "arc". Quite novel at the time. Davison had some awful companions, but Logopolis is an all time classic story. Tom Baker – really liked the series when he did Gothic Horror stories. McGann was fine, the film though I didn't like. And that;s really a comment for all the Doctors…they can be good and they can be duff. Ncuti Gatwa's first two stories I thought dreary but later ones were superior. For proportion of screen time The Fugitive Doctor is hard to beat, I also really like The War Doctor. |

My favorite Doctor is still my first Doctor Tom Baker |
korsun0 | 04 Apr 2025 9:00 a.m. PST |
Tom Baker, because of K9, Leila and Romana (he also got together with an assistant) and also because he upset Mary Whitehouse. I also liked his narration of "Little Britain". |

Mine would be the fourth, Tom Baker. A great Doctor and a wonderful person in real life. |

Even though the 4th is "my doctor," I really like the 2nd (Troughton). |

Tom Baker, followed by John Pertwee. Cheers! |

Pertwee, Baker and the Best of the New Doctors Christopher Eccleston. BTW, this and a similar poll was done a couple of years ago. |

I really got into Dr Who as a child during John Pertwee, but its a toss up between him and Tom Baker nowadays. Of course, I am talking classic 'Who'. David Tennant is my favourite in the new era. |
DisasterWargamer | 04 Apr 2025 2:45 p.m. PST |
The 4th Baker for originals and The Fugitive DR Jo Martin in the new era. |

No love for Peter Cushing who did two movies, and was a wargamer? To be fair, both movies are non-canon, and mostly crap. |

11. Matt Smith. And he had the best Companions, too, for me. Amy Pond and Clara Oswald. Rory as third banana. 10. as second choice, but I think I'd really like #12 Capaldi if I see more of that series. I have a bunch of DVDs of the Tennant. Smith, and Capaldi series but have yet to dive into some of them. But Smith's is the series I watched at he time regularly and that brought me back into the Doctor's universe. Wacky and sometimes poignant scripts. Plus he had such cute companions. |

Tom Baker, though Troughton was great— really brought quirkiness to the role. I like Pertwee, but his era felt more like Doctor Bond than Doctor Who. |

I doubt the budget would have run to providing him martinis. Perhaps a mug of Bovril? |

Technically, this list also lacks Peter Cushing, who did the movies. I like many of them but Tom Baker, being my first, is my favorite. I have to give props to Christopher Eccleston because he reintroduced the Doctor to a whole new generation in grand style, and there would not be the other modern doctors had he failed. |
Deucey | 05 Apr 2025 6:53 a.m. PST |
Peter Cushing was my first exposure. I saw the movie as a kid and started building Lego Daleks. Only as a teenager did I realize it was a tv show on PBS. It may not be ‘canon', but it's still Dr Who! |
Martin Rapier | 05 Apr 2025 10:28 a.m. PST |
It has always been Tom Baker for me. I was slightly too young for William Hartnell although I remember Patrick Troughton (some of those episodes were SCARY). An honourable mention for Christopher Ecclestone, shame he was in it so briefly. |

Best Old School Dr Who 2nd and 3rd Doctors Worst old School Colin Baker Seen every available episode New School Dr Who Tennant, Smith, Ecclestone, Capaldi Worst New School (stopped watching Doctor Karen and the crap show that has followed) They need to reshoot having Capaldi wake up and say "Aye, that was a bad dream" then have a regeneration to change the canon back. Timeless Children was horrible piece of rubbish. |
