You were asked – TMP link

I was watching a video that suggested only by getting many Reps (repetitions) with a game system could you fully grasp it.

Concept being that you should have ten to twelve games under your belt before even thinking of house rules or passing judgement. Likewise, you couldn't be a part-time player with one to two games per year because you'd get rusty.

How many Reps do you get?

Average response: 5.287

Being an inexperienced player playing with several others who are well versed in the rules, I think you can figure out pretty quickly, perhaps even a few turns into one game that it's not for you. And even being in a group of new people you should be able to figure it out in a time or two.

Nobody is going to play a terrible game that they hate 10 or 12 times before they start making changes, or more likely put it away forever and never play it again.

Even though I have 10 games of Spearhead this year, I was prepping for a tournament and was still rusty. Had two big misplays, etc that lost me the game: was thoroughly crushed.

But went 3-2 on tournament day so the practice was important

About 40 a year on average. It may be a bit lowere this year with recvovery time.
An over simple (or bad game) or one that has no personal appeal will take less than 10 games to realise its not for you. But an interesting game may take lots ofoplay to undertstand how to best represent real world tactics. Even more if you have to unlearn the falsehoods in many gmes based on tradition not not real world logic.

Mean might have been more helpful here. Of the 47 who actually gave a number, 28 opted for 4 or fewer. But we never got a clarification of what the OP meant by the question.

For myself, most of the sorting doesn't even require a thorough reading of the rules. I take a copy of the rules and try to find how you move, how you inflict (and measure) casualties, the morale system and the command/activation system, if any. If I can't find any of these at a quick look, the rules don't come home. Life is too short.
