Our game started with the combat of champions on the causeway

With the Vikings gaining a slight edge, the armies then deployed for battle.

The Vikings won the day.
The game was played using Shieldwall rules which are available from my website at link
The Combat of Champions can be freely downloaded there also.

How is "champions on both sides seek each other to fight
personal combat on behalf of their leaders" handled? I am curious as to how they get matched up, why him versus him, but not that other fellow. In the sagas, fights may be between two leaders, each of whom brings his followers, but the followers often have grudges of their own against some fellow on the other side they want to resolve.
I do like the concept of combat of champions.

We simply matched three Saxons against 3 Danes and they fought one to one.
