What do folks think about Shadowdark? Seems a really well presented game.

Meh. It is another game that hints at OSR. Not bad but there are better out there. Does bring back random tables to a lot of new players – not a bad thing for this type of game in my opinion. I prefer Hyperborea 3e for my OSR fix. Or AD&D for an actual fix.

I GMed D&D 5e since it came out in 2014 and have GMed and played the earlier editions of D&D since the original edition back in the 70s. Then I found ShadowDark. I won't be going back to 5e or whatever the new iteration ends up being, as ShadowDark does exactly what I need for fantasy RPG.

I picked it up based on the hype but honestly don't understand why there is so much hype. It's basic OSR of which there are many variations out there. It's good, I am not saying it's not, but it's not the end all be all that people make it out to be. Is it the random tables that get people so worked up? It's basically another OSR game with a darker art style and vibe and random tables.

If you want to get into OSR, it is one of the better ones, but if you already have an OSR rule set that you like, it's just another choice. Not sure why the hype.

Maybe the hype is from people coming from 5e with no or little OSR experience? It's an easy transition from 5e to ShadowDark.

I haven't played Shadowdark specifically yet, but do have an affinity toward OSR type D&D as the official monstrosity has gone off the rails a long time ago. I imagine its morphing with the interests of the newer generations; but at the same time, it has left me at the last train station years ago. Fortunately several OSR systems have visited this station and I have many places to go. Shadowdark has a great presentation and apparently a cultish following. Its probably good, but at that price point (a bit expensive IMO), I'll settle for the many, many other OSR alternatives available. I'd recommend trying it. If you are new to OSR, there are other cheaper options like Dungon Crawl Classics, Cairn, & EZD6 to name a few.
