Battle of Antietam ( Sharpsburg ) 17th September 1862

Timeline 11.45 AM.

United States cavalry, supported by horse artillery, have crossed the Orndorff ( Middle) bridge and are deploying under a spirited fusillade, in order to engage the Confederate skirmishers posted there.

This bridge is lightly held as the Confederates, following the collapse of the sunken lane position, have had to retire in order not to be outflanked.

Meanwhile Major General A.E. Burnside has ordered another assault on the Rhorbach bridge.

With the triumphant Union forces under Brigadier General William French, advancing through the Piper cornfield towards Sharpsburg, the sands of time, it seems, are running out for General Lee.

Thank you for the kind comments everybody. It helps keep the enthusiasm up to do the next set of pictures.

Thankfully I wasn't at the original action, the bloodiest day in American history.

However, I hope that my efforts help to remember and respect the brave men who paid the ultimate price for their convictions on that dreadful day.

Thank you again.

Chris
