"Finishing stuff feels great. Completed vacuuming is infinitely better than vacuuming-in-progress, and despite the existence of the word 'gooning' (don't Google that at work) I'm not convinced it's something anyone enjoys. The wargaming hobby is built on the joy of finishing stuff. Finish building the thing, finish painting it, finish your kill team, your boarding patrol, your 1,000 point army. Given the varied nature of the tasks required to bring an army to the tabletop, most of us have some aspects that are joyless chores to be struggled through (for me it's cleaning mould lines) and that struggle makes completion taste all the sweeter . This nudges many of us towards a task list mindset, enjoying the feeling of nearing completion as units get marked green in the progress tracker and we close in on that most classic of numbers: 2,000 points…" The Bear Bunker

Of course it's good but is it possible? As an example a DBA army. Is it it complete with the basic 12 units or not until you have all the options? Same holds true for FoW and BA. Same with Chain of Command you could have all the options in the book but rest assured the new scenario book you bought will have something you'll need that you don't have. I'm currently gathering all the figures needed to play all the scenarios in the Fireball Forward Guadalcanal scenario book. |

A big problem is people who consider painting a destination and not a journey. If you're painting to "get to the hobby"‘you're missing half of the hobby! I'm a firm believer in what you are painting is what you're meant to paint. Is a playable force done? Depends on rules! When I bought Skaventide I made a WarCry Warband, painted a Warband (~9 models) [endorphins] and played some games [endorphins]. Then a while later a Spearhead event happened and I added like 17 models [endorphins] and player in the tournament [endorphins]. That spearhead was fun and I thought I could use the other one for a few extra models [endorphins] and play that one [endorphins]. Oh look: this is like 750 points of AoS…you get the idea |

I'm with Louis XIV. Miniatures gaming is a journey, but it's not the 7 am drive to work as fast as traffic allows kind of journey. It's more like an unguided tour covering places both familiar and novel, that you can extend indefinitely, and return to places as you like. |

I think that finishing a project is great… not necessary an army but a project. If you set goals and reach them, it gives you a feeling of accomplishment… and that keeps your hobby "fresh". If you break an army down into platoons/companies, then you can finish useable armies without actually finishing the army… … I'm very close to finishing an army project that I've been working on for years… only six more miniatures to finish! That was the original project and it will be great to see it finished. HOWEVER, that doesn't stop me adding a platoon or two later on if I feel the need to continue with the same army. It also gives me the freedom to get other things done while I'm thinking about it. So TLDR: Yes and no :) . |

First off, no army/project is ever really finished until you no longer own it. Years ago I sold off my 1/72 plastic ACW and used the proceeds to buy metal 22mm. All completed, painted, and played. I will not be adding any units. Now, if I find some casualties at a flea market… Spanish American war, Vietnam, and WWII also closed out. I'm more likely to sell rather than buy. At this point in my life, I don't expect to start any new major projects and all my new work is in support of what I have already. |
