Bit of a Spin Off from the "Would the American Civil War have ended differently" thread.

Not taking the same line of approach but rather looking at the old "Could the South have Won" question. The answers covering a lot of the same ground.

Spoiler Alert: The answer is NO

I have posted plenty of family recollections on TMP in past threads. My folks were from land poor in Randolph/ Clay county. Besides the home, my 1800s three room house of the McSwain/ Nelson is still standing the last time I visited. Another key location was the family still. Several notation of guarding the still from Yankees can be found. Also notations of setting up ambushes for patrols of either side that got too close to the still.

Is it "still" there? 😉

One of my friends in high school took over running it. Of course once every few weeks, the State Troopers showed up at class and Johnny to go with them since the had found another one. Moonshine gave way to bootlegging since the Georgia border was only a few miles away.

I had one Uncle in Tennessee who was fond of it. Drove my Aunt nuts. He used to drink it out of a mason jar. I least I think it was a Mason jar. I have tried a few swallows, it is strong. 🙂

Mason jar was common in the south and rural areas. It was widely used for canning and pickling. So moonshine as well.
