And if so, how often? Yes – daily Yes – weekly Yes – fortnightly Yes – monthly Yes – quarterly Yes – once a year No |
35thOVI | 25 Mar 2025 5:48 a.m. PST |
About a once or twice a year. Honestly most films coming out in the last 6 years or so, are bluntly, 💩 |

There is nothing like seeing a movie on the big screen, but, now it has to be something I'm intrigued to see. Often, much of what is produced for the big screen is average, at best. Hollywood has forgotten how to make quick, affordable movies. Often now it is poor remakes of past good or great films. The last one I enjoyed in a theater was Rouge One. |
miniMo | 25 Mar 2025 6:32 a.m. PST |
Trick question that. In the last two years, I've been to the cinema 5 times. But that was 3 times in 2023 to see Godzilla Minus One, and 2 times in 2024 to see Godzilla Minus One Minus Color. =^,^= Gotta say, all the trailers I had to sit through sure convinced me not to go see any other movies… : P |
20thmaine | 25 Mar 2025 6:38 a.m. PST |
So we need an Yes – Other option to capture "special cases". The same film 5 times does mark you out as a "special case". It is a great film though. |
20thmaine | 25 Mar 2025 6:40 a.m. PST |
It took me a while to realise that Rouge One was not an art-house French film but more likely Rogue One |
robert piepenbrink | 25 Mar 2025 6:43 a.m. PST |
No, usually I go to see movies in a multiplex. It's a much lower-class experience, but the popcorn is usually better, and you get trailers instead of lectures. Maybe once or twice a year, but the last two experiences were so bad I'm working on a way to just pay for the popcorn, which is not nearly as overpriced as the movie. |
Flashman14 | 25 Mar 2025 7:00 a.m. PST |
I saw one other thing since Napoleon but have forgotten what it was. When the dollar theater was a thing it'd be easy to take a chance on stuff. |
Sgt Slag | 25 Mar 2025 7:08 a.m. PST |
Yes – rarely. The department I work for, at my employer, rents out a local theater, once each year, for its staff members, and their immediate family members: all movies are free, all day, and we are the only ones allowed into the theaters. My wife and I usually take that day off from work, so we can see as many as we can/want to. Other than that, my wife and I visit a theater maybe 1-2 times, every 3-4 years, as little interests us enough to buy tickets. Cheers! |

Not since The Hobbit, part 1. 🤷 I used to enjoy it, but it's a habit I've gotten away from. I'm not quite sure why. As for trailers… Once I saw a trailer for "Precious". I think it was preceding a really hairy chested Manly Movie like Master and Commander. Target audience? 🤔 As mentioned above, "they" don't make movies anymore for grumpy old men who grew up on decent war, action, etc movies. Look who battled it out in the recent Academy Awards. Those are the values Hollywood loves. I'm a Critical Drinker and Snarky Jay fan. Take it from there. Oh, and thumbs up for Rogue One too. I did see that at the movies. |
JimDuncanUK | 25 Mar 2025 7:41 a.m. PST |
No, nothing to see, rather read a book. |
Micman | 25 Mar 2025 8:17 a.m. PST |
I haven't been to a theater since the The Last Jedi was released. Went with my sons it was a thing that we do together. Movies do not hold my attention that much any more. |
20thmaine | 25 Mar 2025 8:28 a.m. PST |
BTW – I'm roughly once a fortnight, which often means a couple in one week (sometimes a couple in a day) and nothing for the rest of the month. Just looking at the post-pandemic years, there have been some really good films: 3000 Years of longing, Empire of Light, Dune 1, Dune 2, The Holdovers, A Complete Unknown, Roman Holiday, Furiosa, Godzilla Minus One, Conclave, Killers of the Flower Moon And a lot of "meh" And some real stinkers – Bullet Train, Asteroid City, Twisters, Marvels, Napoleon And there has been Megalopolis – glad I saw it though, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to appreciate its full awfulness. |
20thmaine | 25 Mar 2025 8:31 a.m. PST |
Not since The Hobbit, part 1 Wow. I had to check – that's 13 years! Where did all that time go? |
Joes Shop | 25 Mar 2025 8:34 a.m. PST |
I can't remember the last time I was in a movie theater. |
20thmaine | 25 Mar 2025 8:42 a.m. PST |

Choctaw | 25 Mar 2025 8:53 a.m. PST |
I haven't been to a theater since 12-25-2020. I would much rather watch a movie at home. |
JMcCarroll | 25 Mar 2025 8:55 a.m. PST |
Yes – quarterly More if you include Drive-ins. |
Murphy | 25 Mar 2025 9:10 a.m. PST |
Only in special cases. Last movie I saw on the big screen was 2 years ago and was the last Indiana Jones film. Other than that I usually go to special viewings like an anniversary of GWTW, or Casablanca. Most movies nowadays come streaming to Netflix, or Amazon within 1-2 mos, so I can save the money, gas, and obscene snack bar prices. |
King Monkey | 25 Mar 2025 9:53 a.m. PST |
Not any more. Last film I saw at the pictures was the redone version of Star Wars. |
Shagnasty | 25 Mar 2025 10:26 a.m. PST |
Once in the last 10 years. Went to a multiplex to see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3." The film was fine but: the sound was far too loud and we wished we had brought ear plus, the price was high, snacks were too costly. and the place was vast and odoriferous. Haven't been to anything since despite wanting to see "Dune II" on the big screen. I very much lament the closing of the "$1 theaters" that have closed in our area. |
20thmaine | 25 Mar 2025 11:31 a.m. PST |
I guess that it must be tough turning a profit on a $1 USD ticket. |
JMcCarroll | 25 Mar 2025 11:35 a.m. PST |
They make there money on popcorn, candies and soda. |
20thmaine | 25 Mar 2025 11:38 a.m. PST |
Hmm… they'd make a dollar off me then 🙄 |
jdpintex | 25 Mar 2025 11:44 a.m. PST |
Yep, probably fortnightly. I also go for the popcorn. |
myxemail | 25 Mar 2025 11:45 a.m. PST |
Generally, no. As others posted above, the movies made over the last decade or so have not appealed to me and as well to grumpy old men who happen to Wargame. Over the past several years, I have been to very few movies: The most recent Batman movie. I took my nephew, and I do not recall the title. Dune (episode one) Rogue One Hobbit (unfortunately all three parts) The Rise of Skywalker |
Oberlindes Sol LIC | 25 Mar 2025 11:46 a.m. PST |
It's been over a year since I went to a movie theater. I would go, if there were things I wanted to see on the big screen. |
Andy Maloney | 25 Mar 2025 12:34 p.m. PST |
Holly Weird hasn't put out much of anything in the last several years so "No". Besides I have an 82" Screen downstairs with a 7x4x2 sound system and more importantly a popcorn machine!! :) |
glengarry6 | 25 Mar 2025 1:30 p.m. PST |
I usually only go to the theatre if it's a "spectacular" film like a Godzilla -1 that should be seen on a big screen. The last film I saw in the theater was Nostferatu, mostly as I am a fan of the director and the 1922 original. I go to the theater maybe 3-4 times a year. |
Grelber | 25 Mar 2025 2:11 p.m. PST |
Quarterly, or maybe eve just every four months. As many of you noted, there just isn't that much stuff out there I really want to see. Grelber |

When Covid got going I wrote off going to movies, the post office and the dentist. I switched over my grocery shopping to the middle of the night at a 24 hour supermarket reasonably close by. I don't think I've been to a movie since 2020. |

I used to go to the movies as often as possible, at least twice a month from the time I was a little kid, sometimes more often than than. I love the movie experience. Since I moved to Kentucky, 7 years ago, I have seen 4 Godzilla movies, and two others. Ford vs Ferrari, and the West Side Story remake. All of which were very good. Nothing but trash being made now. This is why I have about 3,000 movies on video. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |
Martin Rapier | 26 Mar 2025 1:44 a.m. PST |
Yes, ideally every week at the local film club or the independent cinema, but life sometimes intervenes, so it's probably around 30 to 40 a year at the pictures. I see the odd Hollywood movie, but mostly indie stuff. The last one was 'White Whale' about the expedition to climb the volcano on Heard Island in the sub antarctic Indian Ocean in 1965. I really like films… |
ZULUPAUL | 26 Mar 2025 3:10 a.m. PST |
Went to the movies a week ago, first time in 5-6 years. Most junk coming out of Hollywood isn't worth the price of admission IMHO. Paul |
PzGeneral | 26 Mar 2025 4:42 a.m. PST |
No. I've only seen one film in a theater since COVID, that was Napoleon. I don't remember what I saw before that…. Dave |
FusilierDan | 26 Mar 2025 4:48 a.m. PST |
Rarely. I think most movies are best seen on the big screen. However most screening don't work with my schedule. The last movie I went to was Red One with Dwayne Johnson, $18.00 USD ticket, big comfortable reclining chair, unobstructed view. Well worth it. My other favorite time to watch a movie is on an airplane. The smaller space and screen with few distractions keep me focused on the story. |
huron725 | 26 Mar 2025 6:46 a.m. PST |
Yes – once per year typically. Although, since the Covid Pandemic I have only been to the movies twice. There is just nothing like being at the cinema. Sound quality and visuals can't be beat. |
johannes55 | 26 Mar 2025 9:39 a.m. PST |
yes, a couple of times per year. But I wish I hade not seen Napoleon or Gladiator II |

"But I wish I hade not seen Napoleon or Gladiator II" Some bits of Napoleon I enjoyed, but Gladiator II made me want to pull my own eyes out. I keep a film diary and GII scored very low. I also checked my figures and it looks like over the course of the year I manage about 20 to 30 cinema trips, the other films I watch at home. So about once a fortnight then. |
The Last Conformist | 27 Mar 2025 1:24 p.m. PST |
I saw one movie in a cinema last year, which I think was the first time since 2017. So I might need an option between "once a year" and "no". |
20thmaine | 27 Mar 2025 1:35 p.m. PST |
Either need to add "Other – explain" (which pretty much no-one ever does!) or "Less than once a year but more than never" |
Dentatus | 27 Mar 2025 1:47 p.m. PST |
Maybe once a year – if the movie merits 'big screen' viewing. Or for a special occasion with the grandkids. Mostly I wait for whatever it is to hit the streaming services. |
thedrake | 28 Mar 2025 10:50 a.m. PST |
No.Rather watch movies at home on streaming. |
