Pete Hesgeth and other top officials used an unsecured commercial messaging app to discuss in detail US military plans and linked the editor of Atlantic Magazine in on the meeting. The plans included strike info on the Houthis.

Trump denied any knowledge of this and attacked the Atlantic as a failing magazine instead. Which means he either knew about it, or was not include or informed.

Of course the whataboutism here is that Hillary Clinton used an unsecured server for state department business. So I guess we should lump these guys in with her. But this meeting included a lot of people at top levels.

Hey! Trump promised the most transparent administration in history! You get it and now you are complaining? Just can't make you people happy. 😂

Yes, someone screwed up and included Goldberg "accidentally", at least we will accept that as true for now. Either Waltz or an assistant.

Did it cause the attacks to fail? Did they complete successfully with leaders of the Houthis being killed?

"Compare this with the Obama administration's decision to grant security clearances to Iranian regime-linked figures, or the Biden government's chronic leaking of internal deliberations to preferred media outlets in the name of "narrative shaping." In both cases, information was shared deliberately for political advantage—sometimes with actors who had no loyalty to U.S. interests. The Trump team's sole error was accidental and internal; the others were strategic and often hostile to American strength."

Or the Afghanistan disaster? Makes this screw up seem a lot more minor.

From some alternate sources.

I included the Clinton whataboutism, but there were others, from Biden, and Trump's first term.

"Thoughtful"? I don't think so, nor "competent." But they must learn from this.

What were they using such an unsecured messaging platform for? It just seems so unlikely that this could happen….but I guess it won't happen again! This more than anything else concerned FOX News responders to their article, and rightly so. Not just adding the journalist.

Its possible…but if it was that easy then they are still not on the ball. The whole security integrity depends on a minion with a list? No overlapping measures?

And nobody told the President about the plans and the leak? But that's almost certainly why he called an unscheduled cabinet meeting – that kept the media busy on something else. The shiny object….

Aye, aye Captain, but this is directly concerning Ultra Modern Warfare!

Tort as we know, they don't call it the "deep state" for no reason. There were so many "unnamed sources" his first term, it was as if they were trying to keep secrets by using "The Cone of Silence" from "Get Smart". Look that up if you don't remember. 😉

That is one reason they are cleaning house.

The people in question made a choice to use a non approved, unsecured communication means i.e. downloading something from the APP store. If anything they have demonstrated exactly why it shouldn't be used.
Begone with claims of deep state when those individuals chose to communicate in this way instead of using the secure means available. They screwed up, stop excusing it.

On the BBC Radio news they had actors read the messages out ('cos emojis don't work well on radio)

Their choice of voices indicated a subtle sense of humour at play.

And that's all I have on this one.

"Following the 2016 Democratic National Committee email leak, it was reported by Vanity Fair that Marc Elias (the general counsel for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign) had instructed DNC staffers to exclusively use Signal when saying anything negative about Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.[197][198]

In March 2017, Signal was approved by the sergeant at arms of the U.S. Senate for use by senators and their staff.[199][200]"

Listen to Ratcliff in today's hearing for more. A hearing already! What a refreshing change.

If these representatives had just cared as much about the debacle of Afghanistan, the Mogadishu abandonment, the Benghazi abandonment. About who was running the government for 4 years. 🙄

SBminisguy25 Mar 2025 9:30 a.m. PST

The people in question made a choice to use a non approved, unsecured communication means i.e. downloading something from the APP store.

People at this level, like any Corporate Exec, do not choose their own IT tech. They use what IT tells them to use, and during their "onboarding" process would be issued a FedPhone with MDM and pre-deployed apps.

So why did US Federal entities and leading figures like Clinton, the Congress, and people in the Biden White House/DoD/CIA, decide Signal was OK to use?

I've used secure chat functions and apps before, and in my experience they are "closed groups" that need some kind approval and IT step to add more participants. So who was in charge of that? Or was it less secure? And did someone at that level maliciously add the reporter to the chat, like the DOD person who maliciously yanked webpages celebrating black Americans and others as a protest over anti-DEI measures?

Anyways, another tempest spun up by the media. Pace yourselves folks, expect a new breathless series of OUTRAGE! articles like this to hammer you for the next four years…and as this one fades in a day or so, a new one will be frothed up to keep you in a constant state of anxiety.

Captain Sensible25 Mar 2025 9:34 a.m. PST

It should be noted that the Secretary of Defense said "Nobody was texting war plans", and the White House subsequently confirmed that it is true that Atlantic Reporter who broke the story was included in the chat discussing war plans. The Defence Secretary and the White house are sending contradictory messages and the President says he knows nothing about it when asked by reporters. Not a good look, regardless of your political leanings.

35thOVI Supporting Member of TMP25 Mar 2025 9:47 a.m. PST

SB, exactly the point I was making. Having done group chats in IT in the past, if using contact info, it is easy to grab someone by mistake. Just like sending an email. Start typing a few letters and you mistakenly grab the email of the wrong person. If you do not pay attention to all those who show in "attending", especially if people get in late, you will not catch it. Especially if their actual name does not appear in the attendance list, but for instance an email address.

This I assume was a mistake, (unless it was done intentionally). Fortunately no one was harmed. Because of which, it needs to be learned from and not repeated.

I understand why people are using it as a "gotcha" embarrassment. But not the crowd who continue to try and oust Pete Hegseth and others, in the hope of getting their own sycophants into the dismissed position. Like they had in the first term. Those who will actively thwart the Presidents agenda. It is very transparent.

SBminisguy25 Mar 2025 10:56 a.m. PST

But for all secure Chat/SMS I have used there is a predefined set of users, so if I start typing a name it should only predict that predefined set of users that are already approved and in the system. And THAT is managed by IT after someone else approves that list.

So if this reporter showed up in predicative typing it means someone approved it, probably during the Biden Admin and those legacy approvals rolled over to the Trump Admin, lost in a sea of IT issues to review.

So if that's the case -- WHY was a journalist approved to be on an insider national security chat list? If you review that list are we going to see, I dunno, Jake Tapper show up? Remember the Obama and Biden White Houses both maintained direct insider channels with their "JournoList" allied media contacts.

Unknown. But I think the clever folks at DOGE should do a deep AI review of all IT practices, rules, approvals, partitions and contact lists to see who the hell has and still does have access.

This hearing was already in session on a related topic, yes?
I am not talking about removing anybody. I want to avoid hearing the name "Hillary" ever again. This is about here and now – and the guys who would fix everything.

The Atlantic editor has not revealed any details of the meeting, although we know these were the primary security leaders of the United States and would not have met without Trump's direction and knowledge.

Goldberg did say that the topics included descriptions of specific military actions and included time schedules to the minute on the operational details. This could get people killed, could it not? Gabbard refused to answer any questions, citing classified info restrictions. So yes, there was classified info sharing. And they were talking war plans in some sense.

Finally, IMO we are frittering away any chance we have left of being trusted by other nations with incidents like this. I hope we have not done the same with meetings on Russia or Iran.

And a question – what would happen to military commanders who held a meeting to plan an attack but failed to follow security protocols and accidently gave a journalist full knowledge of their plans? I do not have military experience, but I suspect at least they would be removed from command. Again, not suggesting removal here, the rules are different. But I do think competence is in question. These are people are all supposed to be better than their predecessors.

Neither Biden nor Obama nor Hillary had anything to do with this hilarious mess. Yet I knew before I even opened this thread that the "Yeah, but what about…" brigade would be out in force.
Having been well trained at Fox News, Hegseth went right into the "Yeah, but what about Hillary?" mode. I saw him on CNN.

Can we just agree that "Incompetence explains a lot more than conspiracy."
This whole crew is not as smart as they think they are.
The REAL damage was that it made the Administration look ridiculous.

Hegseth falling back on the tried and true "The Atlantic is a scummy liberal rag and nobody reads it anyway" is not exactly a good response.
Goldberg at first thought he was being pranked. In revealing this mess, he was being very responsible.
SIGNAL is secure? How much do you want to bet that the Chinese and Russians have different opinions on that.
Risky and irresponsible.

@John and the Trump haters..,. and when I saw the story on the web, I knew immediately that I'd see:

"Trump's administration is incompetent!"
"They are jeopardizing our people and our security!"
"Hegseth must be fired!"

🙄

All from mostly the same people who have been saying the same things since day one of this administration and frankly the same stuff about Trump since his previous administration.

As I said earlier, it was either a blunder, which should be rectified or it was intentionally done by an underling, who should be found and fired. (Or shipped to El Salvador. 😂).

I have shown that Signal was an accepted government application as far back as Hillary's last run.
Hegseth did not make the invitation to the liberal "journalist". It was a staffer of Wentz's.
The attacks went as scheduled.

For those demanding Hegseth's head. Whose heads rolled for the Afghan debacle, the Mogadishu debacle, Benghazi debacle?

Times up!! Answer: nobody. Also there were not hearings the next day it made it to the MSM. (In Congress).

See John, not just Hillary. Biden and Obama too. 😉

So when we get the heads for those 3 disasters, all of which caused the deaths of US service personnel, placed on stacks in front of the Capital. Then you can get back with me.

And the Faux outage gets deeper:

"Mark Warner, D-Va., vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, used an encrypted messaging app to work with a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch to connect with the disgraced Steele dossier author. It's the same app Warner bashed top Trump administration officials for using to discuss plans for a strike on the Houthis in Yemen."

"Signal worked great for Senator Warner when he wanted to meet with the disgraced liar Christopher Steele. It's a little surprising Warner is pretending to be so upset about it today,"

SBminisguy25 Mar 2025 12:39 p.m. PST

I want to avoid hearing the name "Hillary" ever again.

Why? Let's compare notes, shall we?

1. Trump Admin: someone screwed up and/or was a hold-over disgruntled staffer who added a journalist to a secure national security chat threat by mistake (or maliciously). This is being investigated and corrected.

2. Hillary Clinton: She didn't make a mistake, she deliberately installed a lower security private server in her home to carry off-the-record emails and communications to bypass transparency and official record logs. We know that server contained at least 30,000 emails related to or mentioning national security, and that it was hacked by the Chinese. AND when she received a lawful subpoena for that server she willfully destroyed all the data and handed over a trashed piece of equipment. She also had private blackberry devices that her group used for off-the-books emails, messages and chat that were also subject to a lawful subpoena. She had those mobile phones literally destroyed with hammers and broken into chunks of plastic to avoid disclosure of whatever business she was transacting off the record. Both of those offenses would have landed a normal person in jail.

John the OFM25 Mar 2025 12:58 p.m. PST

They have been talking about this all morning in the media. As one GEN Ret. and others just said it is a lot to do about nothing. Nothing was affected. The strike on the Houthis was very successful. And is ongoing/continuing …

The Signal App is widely use in DC, etc. Somehow Goldberg got on the list. An investigation is ongoing. This app will no longer be used. And like much tech it can be hacked, but that was not the case.

Yes this is a big deal but again lessons learned, and no real damage was done. Goldberg and his magazine etc. are known for being anti-Trump, etc. As we have seen you can't trust many in the media. So there are other apps[or whatever Signal is] will be used. Problem solved. And Goldberg like many in the media can't be trusted. He won't knowingly be allowed to play in the WH, etc. sandbox. Sadly so many in the media want to be the next Woodward & Bernstein. Plus they hate the POTUS.

And again, this admin has only been in the WH for about 2 months. There will be "rookie" mistakes made not from incompetence, but finding out there are things they don't know. As well as don't know what they don't. One of my Bn Cdrs said that to us. And it is true. I know from my experience you are expected to hit the ground running. So sometimes in your new duty position you may bobble the ball.

All you do is try to mitigate and very much limit dropping the ball.

Think about it … the CV/resume of this Admin's members vs. the last one. The 1st Team is in there now … the last POTUS and Admin were nowhere near the 1st Team. Hell most of them shouldn't have been on field. Should have stayed in the locker room or just stay home. Where they couldn't do any damage or hurt someone.

Frankly, so many in this Admin are very good choices. And it if some don't think so. It will become more obvious as time goes on. Many are former Military or have experience in their new positions in the WH.

The Dems will look for anything to try and attack the new POTUS and his staff…. What about Hillery some ask. She knowing had an unsecure server. She, Obama, Biden and the Dems knew the Russian Dossier' was fiction. But ran with it.

This situation reminds of many times I was talking on a secured Radio system. We had "Secure" Devices. As my RTO, commo NCO, etc. told me. IIRC I could even see the devise. Anyone remember Nestor or Vinson commo security devises ? old fart

So many of you will Bleeped text & moan about this situation. But it was not incompetence … it was a FBleeped text Up. Again if you say this is incompetence look at the last circus in the WH.

This is a good example of the proffered MAGA efficiency savings.
That had 0 to do with it …

The people in question made a choice to use a non approved, unsecured communication means i.e. downloading something from the APP store.
Wrong … it was a standard "app" that was in use when this Admin got there.

If anything they have demonstrated exactly why it shouldn't be used.
Yet it was considered to be by many who were there or came before. It was good to go …

Begone with claims of deep state when those individuals chose to communicate in this way instead of using the secure means available.
But she was told that she couldn't use an unsecure server. But did … People I knew who worked in the WH said everyone who works in the WH, etc. get a long briefing about OPSEC, etc., etc. But she ignored it. So yes, OPSEC is for other people according to her, etc.

They screwed up, stop excusing it.
Yes they did, and admitted it. But just like when my commo SGT gave me the handset to talk on the radio. And it has been established it was secure. I didn't doubt that that was true … Has anyone else been in that situation ?

Again, I've been watching this in the media for hours this morning. My IP was down. High winds ? Something to remember this is the first report. Some things may change as more information becomes available …

Da*n what a clusterfxxk. Amazing incompetence. But 'I´m pretty sure no heads will roll, the "good ole boys" will protect each other and blame everyone and everything except whoever created the group.
Again no this is not the case …

But all other countries take note, do not share info with some people it will most likely leak.

FWIW today and previously it has been made clear. Very few nations can do what the USA can do. When it comes to geopolitics, war, intel, etc. But the cavate is the USA has to have capable effective leadership. As much as some hate this POTUS and many in his admin. In only about two months they have done more to fix the Rat FBleeped text that the last POTUS & Admin did. It is amazing. And I'm not a MAGA Trumper, etc.

But this is the team that is going to move the ball and score. Spending much of their time correcting all the FBleeped texts up it took 4 year for the 2d-3d string to do immense damage.

Again … E.g. :

Open Border Policy

A'stan disaster … which in turn demonstrated to Putin the US POTUS and Admin. didn't have the right stuff. So, after months of lining up on Ukraine's border. He decided to invade. Had no fear or respect for the POTUS, his Admin etc.

Giving 60(?) Billion $ to Iran in an attempt to get the Obama failed Nuke Deal. All that did was give Iran $ to fund Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. Plus continuing to work on deployable nukes. With Israel being #1 on the Target List and most likely the USA #2.

All the time & money wasted on climate change, woke progressive initiatives, Transgenderism, Boys can play on girls' sports teams, etc., etc., etc.

While our enemies took full advantage of this madness.

It would appear that specific targets, both installations and named personnel, were discussed in the Signal group, and we'll before the strikes took place That information, had it been disclosed, could easily have allowed equipment and people to be moved, frustrating the success of the attacks. That "no real damage was done" is down to the integrity of the journalist (who was rewarded for his honesty by receiving a character assassination from Hegseth). One obvious outcome from this event is that US Allies have been made fully aware that they are now working with amateurs and that intelligence sharing won't be as rigorously managed as before.

Reagan was not good in the ME and his team made a terrible series of judgements there. We lost hundreds of Marines in Beirut, pulled out. Hezbollah rose up to go after all of us. The BIG difference, Reagan was a man who could take it, he let the buck stop with him and apologized to the nation.

John, we all did. We all said it was stupid mistake. (See second entry) We also said there is a possibility it was done intentionally. Which it very easilY also could be.

But can't you all admit it is much ado about very little, when compared to the 3 we mentioned. Those were much, much worse and no one paid for them, except the poor kids who lost their lives.

Some of you, democratic politicians and the MSm are demanding heads roll, yet all were very quiet about the other 3 disasters …. demanding nothing.

SBminisguy25 Mar 2025 3:21 p.m. PST

Hillary!!!! Has no bearing on what happened here.

YOU brought her into this, remember? And your own whattaboutism is bizarre.

The Trump thing looks like a mistake or mal-action in a limited way. Either 1) that journalist was preapproved in the system so their name is available via predictive typing, or it was 2) intentional mal-action by the "Staffer" who approved or added them.

Hillary's actions were way beyond the pale on knowingly installing a private server in violation of all OPSEC AND lying about it AND letting it be hacked by the Chinese, and violating lawful subpoenas to destroy evidence.

But WAIT, there's MORE! Remember the deadly assault by Jihadis on the Benghazi compound? Hillary KNEW exactly what had happened -- the Obama Admin was using Benghazi as a staging ground to send militants and weapons from Libya to Syria via Turkish-flagged freighters to a Turkish port, probably Iskenderun, and then across the border to join US-backed Anti-Assad forces…which were mostly all Jihadis. As part of that deal the US used its pressure to get local authorities to look the other way and ignore Libyan jihadi activities. Well, oopsie, some Jihadis got arrested by local authorities and the Jihadis decided the US had betrayed them and stormed the compound to get revenge and take the rest of the weapons cache stored there. Because they had already had people inside the compound they knew where everything was including the Safe Room used by the ambassador and staff…who could only issue a final plea for help via the EVE Online MMO, fer crying out loud.

She knew this. But what she did was say it was a "spontaneous riot caused by a YouTube video." What's more, she actually had the guy who made the video ARRESTED, falsely charged and sent to prison to cover her a$$!

Honestly, how nasty was that? Miles and leagues ahead of this event.

But you have to admit, posting your war plans in a group chat is pretty amateurish 😀 I can imagine the reaction in Washington if the same thing had happened in an ally of the US

Prince Alberts Revenge25 Mar 2025 3:32 p.m. PST

Alot of mental gymnastics and Whataboutism on display here. I guess one can never admit that their "good guys" messed up.

IT doesn't set up your Signal chat groups. The "Deep State" didn't include the journalist. More likely it was a fat finger of one of the chat members.

Reports indicate one of the members of the chat accepted his invitation to the group while in Moscow. If they were using Signal for this particular operation, they have most likely been using it since the beginning. Signal is not the equivalent of a SCIF and what other information has been potentially compromised? Absolute amateur hour.

1. It was not an open public unsecured chat. The group chat app was secure and approved and had been in use by the Federal government since at least 2017.

2. We still don't know how the journalist was added. Some articles say he was added by a "staffer." But opens up two possibilities:

* The journalist was ALREADY IN THE SYSTEM having been added by the Biden admin, and nobody thought to check account access.

* The journalist was maliciously added by the staffer.

IT doesn't set up your Signal chat groups. The "Deep State" didn't include the journalist. More likely it was a fat finger of one of the chat members.

Y'all just don't want to read anything, do you? Signal has a secure capability and articles indicate it had been approved for use in secure mode going back to at least 2017, possibly earlier. AND in secure mode people can only be added with Admin approval and then implemented by IT, you can't just add anybody you want to.

Anyways, I hope this gave folks here the little frisson of anxiety expiation against Orangemanbad you were hoping for. But it's gonna be a looonnnggg four years if you don't pace yourself and be more selective in your outrage.

It was not an open public unsecured chat. The group chat app was secure and approved and had been in use by the Federal government since at least 2017..

Which probably means that it's time to get something new.
What makes you think that it's really "secure"? 🙄
The proverbial Chinese immigrant nerd wiz kids at Math are … Chinese?
What makes you think that SIGNAL hasn't been already been cracked?
It means nothing that the Commies didn't alert the Houthis about the actions. Why would they? It's alleged that the British were very selective about warning convoys based on ENIGMA decrypts. Like I said, "alleged". Maybe Iran would have notified them. But the Commies? Why, and let us know that SIGNAL isn't as secure as was thought? Not their circus, and they were Iran's monkeys.
To me, the funniest thing is that SOMEONE added Goldberg to the group. A known anti-Trumper. And his "rag sheet failing magazine". 🙄 I'll bet its circulation will rise very high.

Treat this like the comedy show it really is, and stop being so defensive. Y'all like to bring up Biden and Afghanistan, which happened in the early months of his administration. What was the effect on the voters? Maybe 0.05% negative. That wasn't what lost Harris the election. She just acted like a goofy sorority girl, not to be taken seriously.

"Y'all just don't want to read anything, do you?"

Bingo! They read the first post, quit and make a comment. Otherwise you would not get the same things repeated again and again. Especially about Signal.

It will be like this until the MSM comes up with a new outrage.

🤔 Well except some will probably be busy on March 29th: 'TeslaTakedown' day. Burning and defacing Teslas, destroying charging stations and dealerships.

I would agree that the evidence suggests that either Trump knew about it or he didn't know about it.

It also appears that it's amateur hour in DC, similar to when the Democrats had the White House.

I've used Signal for quite some time and before that it was Wickr. The approval of the app for federal use doesn't equate it to being the acceptable method of communication for the parties and topic involved.

Some reports are that Waltz inadvertently invited the journalist and others that it was members of his staff. "Deep State" sounds like a sexier culprit and that way the "good guys" won't have to be exposed for the clown show they are.

Prince Alberts Revenge25 Mar 2025 4:15 p.m. PST

Nevermind the fact that the settings for the messages in the group chat were apparently set for self-destruct after a certain amount of time. That would also likely be a violation of the National Records Act. That dastardly "Deep State" must be at it again…

John the OFM25 Mar 2025 4:39 p.m. PST

Want to know something?
If the "Deep State" were really running things, it would be much more efficient than our current Clown Show, or the Biden administration.
This is the kind of nonsense that would earn writers of fiction immediate rejection slips. "Try to make this more believable, please?"
Fiction makes much more sense! This is all a bad SNL cold open skit. Speaking of which, this Saturday's show will be a new one. 🤔 Hmmm. I wonder what they're writing now?

Sigh. Don't you guys ever get tired of this? I know I do.
