As a miniature wargamer, which streaming services do you find the most useful or entertaining?

William Warner22 Mar 2025 8:41 p.m. PST

amazon prime video
you tube

I don't use either of them very often but they're handy for what I need.

TimePortal22 Mar 2025 10:00 p.m. PST

Do not care.

Captain Sensible22 Mar 2025 10:05 p.m. PST

Youtube covers it for me. It has loads of great documentaries and public domain war movies.

I still have Prime, but gave up on Amazon videos after they started charging more to not have commercials. If there is something I really want to see, I just buy or rent it which is still cheaper than the monthly subscriptions I used to have. Amazon, Netflix, Apple TV, and Disney Plus, and the list goes on.

John the OFM22 Mar 2025 10:52 p.m. PST

I refuse to use Amazon Prime.
Because twice when ordering books, they just added it to my tab and I ended up paying $13 USD/month. Both times I had to call to cancel.
So, as a matter of principle, I have even stopped buying books from them.

I guess I prefer HBO. If what I might want to watch isn't there, I guess I don't really need to watch it.

YouTube is all I use…and all I want!

Martin Rapier23 Mar 2025 1:46 a.m. PST

Netflix, although I still haven't quite forgiven them for mucking up The Last Kingdom.

We get Prime Video with our Amazon subscription.

Other services we subscribe to when there is something worth watching, like Domina or Slow Horses.

HBO did muck up Game of Thrones. To be charitable, they didn't stick the ending.
House of the Dragon has strayed a bit from book canon, but we shall see.
The Dunk and Egg series is set to debut later this year, and has already been renewed for a second season. The problem here is that with no dragons or mass battles, a new book can be made every year. HOWEVER… GRR Martin has only written 3 or 4 novelettes so far, and the whole story arc requires 7. Another incomplete Martin magnum opus. Cough cough cough. Seasons 7 and 8 of GoT.

At least HBO has a bunch of other complete series and stand alone shows that won't be mucked up.

Netflix and The Witcher, anyone?

I'm supposed to pay to watch TV on my computer screen? No thanks. I do sometimes pick up useful tutorial videos on YouTube.

And I keep waiting for Slow Horses to come out on DVD. I check about once a month.

There is no Venn diagram in which my TV viewing and miniatures gaming hobby intersect.

Good coverage in many places in the world. Entertaining, relaxing, and informative. Free … well, no subscription cost.

evbates23 Mar 2025 7:18 a.m. PST

Amazon Prime for me.

What is a streaming service? Do books count?

Joes Shop Supporting Member of TMP23 Mar 2025 9:00 a.m. PST

YouTube and Spotify.

Perris0707 Supporting Member of TMP23 Mar 2025 9:17 a.m. PST

YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. But mostly YouTube.

Don't use steaming services. Agree with the real stream!

Youtube – most wargaming info.

Nice, eto. Bulgakov had it right. Now can you get me one at night, with a wood fire burning and stars overhead? It's been much too long.

YouTube Premium. Worth the cost of no commercials.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP23 Mar 2025 7:14 p.m. PST

Tubi. It has the original Doctor Who series (as much as are available), from the 1st Doctor up until the Eighth (I think; whichever number preceded the current run). Plus some good flicks, classic TV. And it's free.

Hoopla is another one, which is licensed through public libraries. Unfortunately, the offerings can be limited, and depending on your library's license, there's a limit to the number of patrons who can "borrow" items on any given day and/or month. And the search function is abysmal.

Only YouTube offers videos that occasionally assist me with the miniatures hobby. Everything else seems to be just entertainment, and I barely participate in that, we have a big DVD (and VHS!) library of our own. I hate when things are not made available for home video ownership by the studios, but the DVD black market can often fill that need (too bad the studios lose those sales, but tough).

Ooh, nice tip Parzival! I have a good sized library of choice Dr. Who vids from 1st through 5th, but Tubi will be good for general watching.

In the UK all available Doctor Who material, old and new, is on BBCiplayer, also free.
Ive got access to Amazon Disney and Netflix, no particular favourite, it just depends what's available at the time.
I tend to go to You Tube a lot, for a mix of wargaming, politics, news , and reviews.
