I'm painting some Perry ACW minis and thought I would have a perfect day today because the beautiful flags I ordered from GMB arrived just as I was finishing off the painting. Much to my disappointment, the flags are just a few millimetres too long to fit on the flagpole because there isn't enough room between the top of the pole and the hand of the mini holding it. I should have measured but I've never had this issue before. Live and learn. Has anyone else ever been burned like this? |

Trim a small notch in the bottom of the flag where it meets the standard bearer's hand until the flag fits on to the flag staff. When properly mounted, the bottom of the flag should look like it is flowing over the hand of the standard bearer. |

Have had this problem on 15/18mm figures, when I forgot to measure. I clip the existing flagpole and replace it with a metal one, having drilled a hole through the figure's hand, or hands – depending on the hands' positions. I've also done the measuring and replaced the flagpole regardless, when I felt the fit was too close or the figure's flagpole was unrealistically thick. The metal replacements came from my daughter's craft supply of pins and fasteners. |

I had this problem as well with the Perry plastic flag bearers. The plastic flag poles are very short and indeed they are just slightly too short to accommodate GMB flags. I resorted to using metal figures for the flag bearers on command stands and then copper rod cut to what length I needed. Flag staffs during the Civil War tended to be on the shorter side any way, so dBerzerk's idea is actually an excellent one, since the flag did indeed often flow over the bearer's upper hand when the flags were being carried. Because of the large size of Union regimental flags, they needed to be lower so the bearer could better control them in the wind, etc. As such, the poles would often only have a few feet of pole that was free below the flag. I achieve a similar affect with the metal flag poles, the length I cut them ends having the bottom of the flag pretty much touching the bearer's upper hand. In other words, there is zero length of flag pole showing between the upper hand and the flag. This keeps the flags nice and low and how they woule have looked during the way. I know that some gamers like to have their flags high up in the air, but historically it's kind of goofy and not correct to have super tall flag poles. |

I'm about to do that very thing about notching the flag. I have some Old Glory AWI British commando figures, with the staff too short for the Vaubanner Graphics flags. I've done the notch out before, and probably will later today. 27th Inniskillen to be exact. |
