It's going to be a beautiful fighter, so beautiful -- and advanced like you've never seen! |
McKinstry | 21 Mar 2025 1:11 p.m. PST |
Good. There will be teething problems but in a very competitive world, this is vital. |
Tortorella | 21 Mar 2025 1:39 p.m. PST |
Everybody will be saying so! I wonder what this will cost? The Chinese just rolled out their copy of the current one 18 months ago. Just don't let the Prez take the plans to his resort to show the dinner guests! |

Guess staying on the cutting edge is best but not so sure that's where wars are going. |
35thOVI | 21 Mar 2025 2:19 p.m. PST |
Why did I think, even this would NOT result in anti Trump remarks? 🫨 According to the web, cost will be less than F22.
Pilots will be able to control so many drones( unsure of the count) that will accompany the plane. They have been flying the test model(s) for 5 years. I believe the previous admin placed some hold on this in 2018, but could be wrong. But if you all want to be concerned about something, try this on for size. Concerning to me, anyway. These are the team ups that brought us gain of function Covid Subject: EXCLUSIVE: Pentagon, Energy Dept. Nuclear Research Projects Tapped Sanctioned Chinese Communist Party Supercomputers | link |

Just joking 35th! Nothing serious🤗! There has been some thought that the J35 likely derived from stolen F35 data. But, I keep saying – we worry about the Chinese getting ahead of us as if we are standing still. But we never are. |

Air Superiority is key to warfighting. We can't allow ourselves to be put in second place in anyway by any of our enemies. Peace thru strength is a deterrent … |
SBminisguy | 21 Mar 2025 7:10 p.m. PST |
And we will call this fighter the F-47 Covfefe… |
Tortorella | 21 Mar 2025 7:52 p.m. PST |
Got it 35th, disturbing and revealing. I knew very little about these supercomputers. Clearly this deserves more attention. The Chinese are obsessed with spying and they have the tools… |
35thOVI | 22 Mar 2025 5:07 a.m. PST |
They have the tools and business and governments foolishly use them for short term gain. |

"Known as Next Generation Air Dominance, or NGAD, the manned jet will serve as quarterback to a fleet of future drone aircraft designed to be able to penetrate the air defenses of China and any other potential foes." My choice for names: "Abaddon", "Azrael" or "Thor". |

Cthulhu? The F-47 Cthulhu! |
35thOVI | 22 Mar 2025 9:01 a.m. PST |
Cthulhu Probably has copyright issues with Lovecraft. 🙂 I like the whole angel of death concept. The "revelations" end days stuff. I actually like "Azrael" the best. A plane being the "angel of death". But I would settle for "Thor", God of Thunder, lightning, storms, strength, and protection. No copyrights with Valhalla. 😉 |
KarlBergman | 22 Mar 2025 9:09 a.m. PST |
My biggest problem with this is that Boeing is going to build it. With the problems that they have with their commercial line, it is worrisome thinking what their lack of quality control will build into this aircraft. And yes, I live in Washington state and have had friends that worked for Boeing in the past. The Boeing of today is not the same one that used to build aircraft. |
SBminisguy | 22 Mar 2025 10:46 a.m. PST |
My choice for names: "Abaddon", "Azrael" or "Thor". Thor?! How dare you! That name is reserved in perpetuity for the Theatre High Orbital (THOr) space-to-ground strike system that drops "Rods from God" onto targets. |

Thor 2? Or Thor Too? 😉 O still like the first 2. Rath of God stuff. |

Yes the "Rods From God" weapon system. Steel telephone pole sized rods, more or less. Fired from orbital weapons platforms. No explosive warhead, just the inertia of the rods entering the atmosphere, gaining speed, heating up, etc. When they hit their target, they could have very a much similar destructive effects of small-med KTs nukes. But without the radioactive fallout. They may be up there, but the Gov't would deny it … |
McKinstry | 22 Mar 2025 4:07 p.m. PST |
I'm betting Lockheed gets the contract for the Navy 6th gen. Boeing is shutting down the F-18 line and unless some other close ally buys a ton of F-15EX, the US would have only one fighter company left with stealth engineering expertise. Northrop will be building B-21's for at least two decades and seems to have that niche and we only have three companies left to build the highest end military aircraft. We cannot afford to drop that number to two. This is a defense infrastructure issue as much as anything. |
John the OFM | 23 Mar 2025 2:42 a.m. PST |
Steel telephone pole sized rods, more or less… Titanium in the iteration I read about most recently. Much higher melting point, so less ablation on reentry. |

Back to naming it F-47 Cthulhu. You can then call the drones, missiles, etc Spawn of Cthulhu. Hey DOGE! If you're monitoring TMP, and I'm sure you are, I work cheaper than the Department of Defense Department of Naming Things! |

The costs are going to be interesting. The F35 program was initially meant to have a purchase price of around $200 USD Billion, but ended up at $407 USD Billion. With an inferior version of the F47 available to "allies", I don't see many countries signing up to the program in the current environment, only adding to increased cost for each US aircraft. Europe will probably go it alone on a 6th Generation aircraft. The European strategic specification will be interesting. If the European aircraft is based on Russia being the predominant foe, the cost performance balance means that a much cheaper aircraft with capabilities of about 80% of the F47 will be a good choice. If the performance requirement is to match the F47, it will come with a similar price tag as the F.47 as I suspect the overall volume will be similar. I suspect the choice will be dependent upon whether or not the aggressive US rhetoric continues. |

I love that in The Moon is Harsh Mistress, that the Lunies basically won by throwing rocks at Earth. Did Heinlein get a patent on that? |
35thOVI | 24 Mar 2025 6:36 a.m. PST |
"Allvin said in a statement that the F-47 will have a lower price tag than an F-22 — which has a unit cost of around $143 USD million. The Air Force requested $2.7 USD billion for the platform in its budget request for fiscal 2025, indicating that it planned to spend $19.6 USD billion on the aircraft over the next five years. "Compared to the F-22, the F-47 will cost less and be more adaptable to future threats — and we will have more of the F-47s in our inventory," Allvin said. "The F-47 will have significantly longer range, more advanced stealth, be more sustainable, supportable, and have higher availability than our 5th generation fighters." " |
Martyn K | 24 Mar 2025 8:01 a.m. PST |
I understand what was said about the F.47 price. I also have yet to see an advanced USAF aircraft come in anywhere near the original cost. The B2 was 22 Billion for 132 aircraft, but turned out at 44 Billion for 21 aircraft. The F22 was supposed to be 143 Million a piece but turned out to be 350 Million. So I am not prepared to buy into the idea that the F47 will be cheaper than the F22. the track record makes me a little suspicious. |
Inch High Guy | 24 Mar 2025 8:44 a.m. PST |
The first 90% of the aircraft program's budget is typically spent on R&D. The second 90% is spent setting up production. The third 90% is procurement. The final 90% is spent on maintenance. |

Where do the $800 USD screwdrivers and $3,000 USD toilets come in? |
SBminisguy | 24 Mar 2025 10:49 a.m. PST |
Where do the $800 USD USD screwdrivers and $3,000 USD USD toilets come in? When the Defense contractor wins the bid. Once that happens, the Defense contractor will cite the need for "MilSpec" compliant screwdrivers and toilets that has hard specs for things like, I dunno, the toilet has to continue operating at -10 and +10 Gs. No commercial toilet does that, so they tool up a subscontractor to produce the Crazy Toilets, spend a lot of money for x1000 crazy toilets and then shut it down. |
Legion 4 | 24 Mar 2025 8:07 p.m. PST |
Did Heinlein get a patent on that? If so it would probably be very classified … 😎 Inch high +1 High Tech costs … and the higher the tech the more it costs… The is pretty much SOP … SBm +1
When the Defense contractor wins the bid. Note: some of the tech may have civilian applications. Also, rumor is some of those very expensive toilet seats, screw drivers, etc., most of the $ may actually be going to some very, very Black Ops tech, etc. |
