Just finished a good book "Defending the Arteries of Rebellion". It really focuses on the efforts and plans made by the CSA, not just the battles. It focuses on the Mississippi River area.
The two things that stood out to me is that the CSA had very good ideas and knew what they needed to do, they just had such an up hill fight from lack of everything they needed, from iron to engines to skilled labor to build the boats. A lack of over all command didn't help either.
The other thing that stood out to me is just how inventive, creative and adaptive the CSA naval effort was. They really did manage to do alot considering how little they had to work with and were they started from in mid 1861.
Also, according to the book the torpedo caused more problems, sank more ships then any other weapon used. Anyway for anyone interested I would recommend it:) It was good research for me in helping me decide how to handle the subject in my game:) |
