The battle of Maldon opened with a combat of champions on the causeway before the main Saxon and Viking armies engaged.

To replicate this Richard Speedman has developed an innovative quick set of rules (two pages) which we will use at the Society of Ancients Maldon Battle Day at the end of this month.
His Combat of Champions rules are available as a free download from my website at link

The Society of Ancients Battle Day takes place on Sunday 30th March from 9 a.m. at Hermitage Village Hall, Pinewood Cres, Hermitage, Berks RG18 9WL.

There will be about 12 different rulesets all refighting the Battle of Maldon. You can just turn up and either look at all the games or take part in a game. £ 12.00 entry. There will also be a talk about the battle from eminent medieval historian Matthew Bennett.
