Astronomers do use a year zero: Astronomy tends to operate with its own rules. Notice in the Wikipedia article that this peculiarity of numbering doesn't apply to history. And I would argue that there cannot, in practice, be a 0 year just like there cannot be a 0 note in music (the tonic note is identified as 1.) Finally, it is 2001:A Space Odyssey and not 2000:A Space Odyssey for a reason! |

The musical analogy is lost on me, I'm afraid, but clearly there can in practice be a year zero as astronomers have used one for centuries. And obviously I know historians don't use one – otherwise I wouldn't bring up the astronomers'. |

BCE is WOKE! Ah! A problem there OFM. Do we have an agreed start date for the term WOKE? Do we need two? One Pre pejorative and one Post Pejorative. Then we would have PRPW and POPW which kind of feels like where we came in! For what its worth I think BCE/CE sucks. Purely personal choice, founded on no principals held, or violated. |
