Don't forget to mention that Chess.com allegedly wants to rename the Bishop, to remove chess from its Christian roots.

Have at it, ye woke!

Lest some omodhaun accuse me of lying, I read it on the Internet! So it has to be true!

I prefer Moliere myself… ;-)

But this nonsense doesn't surprise me; I chalk it up to busybodies with nothing better to do and a craving for attention/virtue signalling. A proper physical labor job would round out their underemployment nicely, since they apparently have time to waste…

You know it takes little effort to verify stories, just a little time. But I know it's easier to vilify sources that don't agree with one's politics. 🙄

Just a 3 minute search and copy and paste. There were lots more. The woke do not stop. They may hide temporarily, but they are in it for the long haul.

But I fear you are a voice in the wilderness. Much easier to find a story that agrees with your world view and defend it from all comers. Google John Clees' monologue about extremism.

Hush, 35th. It is the right of Modern Man to read only Pravda, the Volkisher Beobachter, the New York Times or the Guardian Formerly Known as Manchester and to regard all contrary information as anti-Party propaganda.

More seriously, they'll do no measureable harm to Shakespeare: he exists in too many copies. The damage is an opportunity cost. Writers and would-be writers will conclude that writing anything contrary to the Party line is too much risk for too little reward, tuck the manuscript of "The Master and Margarita" in the back of a drawer and take up a career driving trucks. Story-telling will be left to Party hacks.

Comfort yourself that not all manuscripts burn, and that regime censors aren't half as sharp as they believe themselves to be. I treasure my copies of "On the Marble Cliffs." And even Party hacks sometimes tell a truth accidentally. I doubt a modern audience would see "The Crucible" quite the way Arthur Miller intended.

What, no Pixies? Who then changes the color of leaves in the fall, makes my dog bark outside, and hides my garden tools when, occasionally, I want them?

There no longer be mention of "Fairy" in a "Midsummer nights dream", they will now be referred to as:

"airborne humanoid who possess magical powers"
😉

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP17 Mar 2025 2:54 p.m. PST

Shagnasty, don't be silly. Pixies don't hide garden tools. Cold iron, after all, and there are union rules. Hiding stuff is a gremlin responsibility. Right now, a couple of them are lurking nearby with my more recent translation of Juenger, and chuckling evilly.

I'm sure there are, and all designed to similarly provoke a response of outrage, click bait and a general undermining of western democracy.

GB News? Dear me.

There are far bigger things to worry about in the world than a bit of liberal handwringing about Shakespeare legacy, but it is vitally important to our lord's and masters that we don't look up, as they run off with all our money.

Martin

"There are far bigger things to worry about in the world than a bit of liberal handwringing about Shakespeare legacy, but it is vitally important to our lord's and masters that we don't look up, as they run off with all our money."

🤔

Yes, there are far more important things. Most we can do very little about. But… there are a lot less important things. This, if one feels it is a ridiculous attempt to rewrite and slowly in a step by step process, destroy the history and culture of one's country, is one you have the power to put a stop to.

I guarantee you, it won't be their last attempts.

But if you agree with what they are doing, then yes, there are more important things to do.

Pzivh43, thanks

If one wants to be active about something you disagree with, there are simple things you can do. I learned from the opposition.

In a case like this, you can call the museum and complain. Do not donate to them, if you did in the past. Do not visit. Complain to your representatives, phone, letter, emails. Notify others you know who you think would care, about what is happening. (I do that with my email chain, as do they me. They then forward to their email chains). Post it on TMP if it relates to history. 😉 Notify local or National media if you think they might care. Of course there are protests, but most of us are too old for that. 🙂 I may have left some out.

Lastly, your vote.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP18 Mar 2025 7:06 a.m. PST

I see your excuse has changed, Martin. First it didn't happen because it didn't come from your preferred new source. Now it did happen, but talking about it is a distraction from theft. (So, of course, would be talking about miniature warfare.)

You must be the best judge of the situation in your country. In mine, I find that I don't really have two sets of "lords and masters." The people cheerfully denigrating my culture and values overlap quite a bit with those living well at taxpayer expense. Perhaps things are different there?

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP18 Mar 2025 1:23 p.m. PST

Shakespeare probably did more harm to English history than any other writer. His plays were a healthy mix of entertainment and Tudor propaganda but not much history.

As has been said, a few changes to wording won't harm his rep one bit and you can find an unchanged version whenever you want to.

You may have nutters in the US who vote based upon criticism of even a national figure like Bill S but we tend to take elections a lot more seriously than you over here.

You guys really need to learn to read English properly. Twist it how you will, no point in talking to people like you.

As relates to this statement:

"Shakespeare probably did more harm to English history than any other writer. His plays were a healthy mix of entertainment and Tudor propaganda but not much history."

Does anyone read Shakespeare as history? He was a playwright. Somewhat like taking Hollywood as History. Shakespeare wanted to please those in power. Irking the Tudors would do him no good, nor make him money. Besides possibly losing the old head, or rotting in prison. Neither the Yorks nor Tudors had been very forgiving in that timeframe.

John the OFM19 Mar 2025 9:20 a.m. PST

Never worry. "Shakespeare in the Park" will have a Black Buckingham, a Latino Westmoreland and an Asian Woman as Henry V.
See? All taken care of.
And Rosie O'Donnel as Falstaff. Mark Hamill as Doll Tearsheet and Kevin Dpscey as Juliet/Lady Macbeth.

Star Wars to be decolonized. It has been suggested that the fabulously popular space opera undergo decolonization due to several glaring and problematic issues including white supremacy, racism, genocide, misogyny, slavery, and heightism.
White Supremacy: the director and ultimate supreme decision maker, George Lucas, is white. Racism: the evil villain, Darth Vader, appears in black and is voiced by a black man. Genocide: an entire planet (Alderaan) of peaceful people is destroyed by the evil Galactic Empire. Misogyny: the Princess is taken into custody against her will and "needs rescuing" by male characters. Slavery: droids are given personalities and emptions yet are enslaved by both the hero and the villains. Heightism: the Jawas are a race of half-height beings who engage in theft, shady sales, and are unable to repel attacks from a small Imperial force, despite controlling a massive sand crawler. ENOUGH of this INJUSTICE!!!

Shakespeare inspired Game of Thtones, which is also lily white with all-English accents. Except for one lone American and one strikingly handsome Dane.

Parz, I honestly am not a fan of WS. I hated reading it and I do not enjoy movies based on his stories. Sadly, sort of boring.

But I have serious issues with woke revisionism, even with old Willie. 😉

John the OFM20 Mar 2025 1:37 p.m. PST

The trick is finding a play you would like. In Julius Caesar, the language and politics are very straightforward.
It's very chilling at the opening of Act IV, after JC is assassinated, to see the triumvirs "making a list". Marc Antony is persuaded to add someone to the list, just to keep the peace. " He shall not live. Look, with a spot I damn him."
Not flowery at all.
Richard III is also straightforward.
And who can resist "Band of Brothers"?

Mark J Wilson22 Mar 2025 9:11 a.m. PST

@ John the OFM

Actually being invented outside the christian world and called Chturange the original 'chess' piece names are: -
Raja (king)
Mantri (counsellor/advisor) now queen
Gajah (elephant) now rook/castle
Ashva (horse)
Ratha (chariot) now bishop
Padati (foot soldier) now pawn

John the OFM23 Mar 2025 10:23 a.m. PST

Yes, and "checkmate" is from the Persian "Shah mat", or "The King is dead". 🤷
I'm merely making fun of the Woke, which we are apparently required to do at least once a day.
I'm surprised "they" aren't going after the Knight also.

Tomsurbiton24 Mar 2025 9:16 a.m. PST

It is not all wokery at Shakespeare's Birthplace. Besides the knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides in every room of the House, my partner and I recently enjoyed seeing actors from "Events in History" portraying the scene from The Merchant of Venice in which Portia speaks disparagingly of her suitors, ending with the Duke of Saxony's nephew, whom she likes
"Very vilely in the morning when he is sober, and most vilely in the afternoon when he is drunk". Her acting colleague held up a hollow picture frame next to my head during this part of the speech, the film of which caused some amusement when viewed by friends on social media.
