For the Ides!

There are rather a lot of them (1500 some-odd years will do that):

So rather than list them all, let's just put forth our own favorites and vote from those.

Mine:
Julius— hey, it's his name!
Octavius/Augustus
Trajan
Hadrian (solely for the wall)
Marcus Aurelius— a true "philosopher king."
Constantine I
Constantine III Flavius Claudius Constantinus— the only British Caesar (loosely linked to the legend of Arthur)

Who are yours?

My top two:

Caesar Cardini — the Italian chef in Tijuana who invented the salad.

Cesar Romero — the 'Latin from Manhattan' is the Joker.

Julius and Vespasian.

The salad.
Second place goes to Octavian, who had to clean up a real mess, and third to Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos, who died as is proper for an emperor.

Ciáran Hinds.

If you're not looking for a smartass answer, I'll go with Antoninus Pius. He reigned for ~20 years and absolutely nothing of historical significance happened. No famines, no barbarian invasions. Nothing. Zip. Nada. I don't even think he persecuted any Christians.
Kind of like Eisenhower. Sure, there were mini crises, but nothing beyond sending a policeman to arrest someone.

Also noteworthy:
Kaiser Wilhelm

It's TMP. I've long ago realized I have zero control over the quality and nature of any poll. Nominate anyone/anything loosely named "Caesar" (or the equivalent). Be as smart or as smart@$$ as you like. (Heck, I might even vote for one of those nominees.)

Caesar salad.

I could go for a nice Caesar salad with grilled chicken for lunch today, actually.

For all you jokers who are responding "salad", if you stab any salad enough times on the Ides of March, you can have a Caesar Salad…

Just saying.

Caligula. Distrustful of the rich, snobbish, aristocratic senators, champion of the common Roman citizen and soldier, and attacked the ocean to demonstrate nothing is safe from him. Also, his unpredictability and insane actions were quite entertaining, thanks to possible lead poisoning.

Mehemet II – First Ottoman to claim the title. My fave because he was Vlad III's punching bag.

Sid Caesar, of course. Freakin' Brilliant.

King Caeasar, because I like Godzilla movies.

Caesar from the planet of the apes movies would be my other choice.

Being a big POTA fan …

… I considered that one. He was given the name as a personal name before he became a leader in the new movies, so he's not so much "a Caesar" as "Caesar". That said, he is a great tragic character.

Parz, never had a favorite, or thought much about it. I have thought about which were better, but that's not the question.

Heliogabalus. Any young Syrian lad who gets the throne, is thoroughly inept, who managed to marry Vestal Virgins twice and yet lasted four years, has to be interesting.

Dagwood17 Mar 2025 1:12 a.m. PST

Eto, would that also disqualify Julius Caesar ? He was also Caesar rather than 'a Caesar'

Personal logo Murphy Sponsoring Member of TMP17 Mar 2025 12:13 p.m. PST

Caesar Romero….

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP17 Mar 2025 1:03 p.m. PST

would that also disqualify Julius Caesar ?

I would give him a pass since the use of the name as a title derived from his leadership. Then again, he wouldn't be on my list of favourites, so, the point is moot.

John the OFM17 Mar 2025 7:26 p.m. PST

Little Caesar's pizza.
But it's not as good as Sabatini's. But as Caesars go, it's okay, I guess.

Should it be "Caesar" rather than "Augustus" as a title? Technically?

Anyway, I am happy to see the jokes up there and can't think of any new entries!

So to play it sober and honest, I'll sound off with:

Julius (the original)
Octavian/Augustus
Claudius
Vespasian
Trajan
Marcus Aurelius
Julian "the Apostate"

And if we include Byzantines/Eastern Roman:

Justinian
Heraclius
Basil II
Constantine XI

Sheesh, no one ever votes for Pertinax, Phillip the Arab, Phocas, or Andronikos.
