Trying to fill in a few gaps. Multiple sources tell me Cyril Kornbluth carried a machine gun through the snow in the Battle of the Bulge, but no one tells me in what unit. Does anyone have an idea?

Gordon Dickson served in the US Army 1943-46, but none of the obvious sources tell me where or as what. Can anyone fill me in?

Thanks.

The 26th Infantry Division is what Chat GPT comes up with!,( having previously served in the 97th ID.)

I don't trust AI – but I agree its hard to find anything beyond him manning a .50 Cal HMG!

PS: Applying to The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, Missouri. is what Chat suggests.

Sorry I couldn't be more help!

That's plenty of help, Herkybird. Thanks! I take it this applies to Kornbluth? That puts him in Third Army under Patton, pretty much continually on the attack. A very different Battle of the Bulge experience than, say, Kurt Vonnegut who was with the two regiments of the 106th Infantry Division when they surrendered. And yes, I can see where carrying a .50 cal through snowdrifts didn't do his heart any good. That's what eventually killed him.

I should probably go re-read "The Only Thing We Learn from History."
