The regrets poll got me curious. How many unfinished projects do you have? By unfinished I mean unplayable. So, for example, only having two units of Romans for an army, or 12 gunfighters but none painted.

Am I freak if I'm at 0?

I'm adding to all my games – terrain, new units etc. But every army I have is playable. In most cases, I can provide troops for 4 players or more….

Two – 1:300 World War I aircraft, and 10mm WW2.

Steamingdave210 Mar 2025 11:51 a.m. PST

French Indian Wars in 28mm, Crimean War in 10mm. I have lots of projects which are playable, such as my Nine Years War 10mm but still have lots of figures to add

A few, the most recent being some W40k Space Marines I had an old box of because we were going to do Space Weirdos…

I have some plastic gunfighters, some Mahdists, some 20mm WW2 vehicles etc, etc.

Guilty as charged!

Actually, I'm at zero. But there are a number of cases in which I'm not happy with some aspect or another--mostly rules.

Does a spare army count as an unfinished project? I have 6mm Napoleonic British, Portuguese, French and Spanish ready to go to war, for instance. But there are Russians, Austrians and Prussians kept in a box for when I run out of things to paint, and Bavarians sitting beside the painting surface.

Personal logo Extra Crispy Sponsoring Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 12:10 p.m. PST

@robert p I would say no. You've got the peninsula covered, so battles are in the offing. But if you only had, say , Portuguese and Austrians, then yes.

Also, if you only ever intended to build one side – Necrons for example – as long as your army is playable it is finished.

colgar610 Mar 2025 12:11 p.m. PST

"Finished" – what does that mean, exactly? I don't have *any* projects for which I wouldn't buy at least a few more items, if the opportunity arose.

Perris0707 Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 12:14 p.m. PST

28mm: Mongol army, Rus, Early Crusades (Byzantine, Crusader, Fatimids, and Seljuks), Tibetan (re-doing an entire army), Franco Prussian War (both sides)
15mm: FPW, ACW, APW, Norman, Saxon, Viking, and Slavs. I am probably forgetting some as well. Most of these are in various stages of "completion" ranging from almost done to barely begun. But I do live in an area with extremely long winter months, so never a fear of boredom settling in.

At least 8 new sets are on final stage. Some are even casted and ready but not maked available yet.

One- 15mm WWII.

No opponents because 20mm is the preferred scale with my main gaming mate, and his collection is huge. Which means the figures and models are in a box and only about 10% finished- and unlikely to progress.

BrockLanders10 Mar 2025 2:05 p.m. PST

I was thinking about this just yesterday. I have 3 projects finished- 28mm ACW, both armies done, 28mm WW2 with completed American, German and Russian forces and an ancient Greek and Persian 28mm armies complete. Still must finish 4 ancient armies in 10mm, Russian and German 6mm WW2, 28mm ancient Egyptians and Hittites. A couple of years ago I made the decision that all of my current unfinished projects must be completed before I start any others. I've been making pretty good progress towards that goal

William Warner10 Mar 2025 2:39 p.m. PST

One--28mm Austrian Napoleonics. All my gaming friends agreed on 28mm Napoleonics, then bailed out. Go figure…

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 2:52 p.m. PST

Thank you, EC. Yes, I learned a generation or so back that the minimum build for any wargame project was both sides and terrain.

Needless to say I learned the hard way.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 3:03 p.m. PST

I'm not good at math, so I'm counting.

Also not worried about them. It's not a job.

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 3:33 p.m. PST

Every time I try to count those projects that I have not got to a 'comfortable' position with (which usually means I can play with them and have some variety for scenarios but would like more) I remember more. Then I remember all the figures I bought to get that variety and how many of those I haven't 'finished' yet. After that I just settle back and think "I'll not need to buy any more for a couple few years now" – but the, of course, I do just that.

It's a hobby, cheaper than golf, and I can afford both the cash and the time so it doesn't bother me much. I've even ditched some old stuff to make space for all the stuff I don't need to get !!!

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 3:44 p.m. PST

Too many, but apparently not enough.

(Translation: "Ooo— shiny!")

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 3:44 p.m. PST

Based on this extremely liberal criteria I have two.

Early Medieval Irish 15mm Intro Armati. I don't have an opposing army.

FPW French 15mm. Again no opposing army and my regular group doesn't either.

Every other period I have both sides and enough figures for a small skirmish.

pzivh43 Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 3:45 p.m. PST

Currently have 2: 15mm Sudan project and my Stargrave project. Colonial armies are almost done, maybe a game in a month or so!

Personal logo Yellow Admiral Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 4:06 p.m. PST

31.

Many of those are projects to expand an existing game/collection into a new theater/conflict. For instance, I can do aerial dogfights in the 1942-43 Pacific War, but my North Africa and CBI and East Front dogfight collections are only partially done and unplayable. That counts as one complete, 3 to do, even though I have the rules, dice, markers, stands, hex mats, etc. all ready to go. I have naval miniatures for nearly any conflict from the dawn of history through 1945, but only certain specific periods/battles are playable; every year or two I fixate on a new naval topic, paint a bunch of stuff for it, and then game with it.

I also have a lot of collections that used to be playable, but for games I'll never play again. My Successors and Punic Wars collections are like this – I count them as "not done" even though the figures are all painted, because I have rebasing and repairs before they see the field of battle again.

To look at this from the opposite perspective: I have at least a dozen actual ready-to-go games in the shed right now, and could double that if I used an existing miniatures collection with a new set of rules/markers/dice. I do this at least once a year.

None. Every army is playable and enough for multiple players to take part.

None? A million?

For Valentine's Day game day (day after, actually) we played Not The St. Valentine's Day Massacre. I had plenty of terrain, vehicles, gansters, and police. Skipping two months due to sports on the weekends. Next is The Battle of Puebla for Diez de Mayo (Cinco is on a Monday). I can play it with French and Mexicans. Or I could play it with red and green Martians (did that once after I donated the old figs). SWMBO wants to play it with Star Wars figures … I get the French as the Empire, but the Mexicans really aren't rebels, they're being invaded.

In the interim SWMBO and I (possibly DOM, too) are likely to play some Death May Die (I have my part of the new KS painted) and Nemesis (DOM has 2 of 3 sets painted) and probably a drive-in movie riot/assault. So good there.

On my table, I have some Woodlands Tribes figures that I need to seal (but I already have enough to fill several tables), some skellies in build (got tons of skellies, too), some scifi guys to paint up b&w, and some misc figures and a couple terrain bits. Nothing I need for a game on the horizon.

What does that equal?

myxemail Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 6:00 p.m. PST

Three unfinished projects at this time:
28mm WW II for BA or CoC
1/300 Battle of Britain using CY6
28mm sci-fi. I have two sides with about ten figures each, so I could do a small skirmish. The sci-fi is my largest pile of opportunity, as I want a suitable inventory of humans and alien types to draw from

Grattan54 Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 6:26 p.m. PST

Four. But each of them is quite small. If I focused I could complete each one in a week or two.

Titchmonster10 Mar 2025 8:05 p.m. PST

At least 8 real projects. All but one are underway in some fashion or another.
28mm pirates & ships
28mm WOR
28mm TYW
15mm WWII- allies and Germans
15mm Martians
28mm WSS
15mm WSS
20mm Afghanistan

Various little Bleeped text like a few DBA armies

John the OFM10 Mar 2025 8:35 p.m. PST

I have a few "projects" that I've been running games for a while.
But I keep adding stuff to them. Right now, my "projects" are AWI, Pirates, and Armies and Enemies of the Comanche.
All of them are open ended, with "unfinished" additions. Sue me. 😄

I have Massachusetts Continentals in Bounty Coats, sitting primed in a tray.
I have British Marines and Moby Dick, sitting in trays.
And I have Spanish SYW and Texas Rangers awaiting paint.
All of these projects are quite well off, not needing these newcomers.

Everything else has been sold off. So, TECHNICALLY, I am … 😱🤷

Shoot. I'm old. Valar Morghulis.

Personal logo Sgt Slag Supporting Member of TMP10 Mar 2025 8:49 p.m. PST

Unfinished? Well, that would be 1) unpainted mini's, in an aggregate form; 2) an aggregate of two, related game sessions planned, ready to run, but not yet scheduled to run (waiting for key players to recover from illnesses before I schedule the two-game series).

This post has made me realize that I might need to schedule them both, back-to-back, to strike while the anvil is hot. Only problem with that is I need a group of players who can commit to playing both days in the same weekend, and that is very doubtful with how busy everyone is, these days… Cheers!

TMPWargamerabbit10 Mar 2025 10:08 p.m. PST

Hmmmm,
Partial or incomplete projects in no particular order but grouped for gaming groups:

1). B&P 28mm ships. Over a dozen ship models needing their paintwork and assembly.
2). B&P 28mm North America Woodlands Indian tribes. Approx 200 miniatures.
3). B&P 28mm NA French and early Colonial English collection. Again about 300 miniatures.
4). B&P 28mm Swedish colonist militia faction…why them I still ask myself but they existed for a moment on the historical time line.
5). B&P 28mm Dutch faction. Approx 140 miniatures.
6). Post 1700 era units to expand the current B&P factions in collection. Spanish, English, and French. Including Chinese and Malay pirates plus Arab slavers.
Note: Also painting a batch of 1/32nd pirate miniatures for grandson and granddaughter to play the B&P game. But they are painting the miniatures under my watching eye.

7). Organize and paint the entire Oak & Iron 1/700 ship collection for games.

8). 25/28mm 1806 Prussian Napoleonic collection. Have some units but incomplete for a scenario game. Figure 800 miniatures. 1813-15 collection near completed.
9). 25/28mm 1790-96 and 1805-07 Russian collections. Another 800 or so miniatures. YR1812-15 well covered and complete.
10). 25/28mm of Naples or 2Sicily. Both pre-Murat and Murat's troops. Only 300 miniatures… maybe more. They are colorful.
11). 25/28mm English army for Peninsular battles. Have Portuguese and most Spanish but can always add more Spanish.
12). 25/28mm South American units….. yep its that bad.
13). 25/28mm Swedish collection 1809-14. Really a work in slow progress. Call it 300 miniatures.
14). My 25/28mm Vendee collection. Have a large French republican collection they need fresh meat on the tabletop as beating up the Austrians and Italian 1790's minor state sometimes boring. I do have a Papal state 1790's army…..how many gamers go that deep.
15). 25/28mm Bavarians. Still haven't touched them for ten years+ now.

16). FoW 20mm collections needing attention. Yes, I paint for 20mm gaming and not 15mm.
To start this list my WW2 FOW Japanese collection. Maybe 600-800 miniatures.
17). FOW 20mm Chinese collection. Another mob of infantry for maybe 500 miniatures. Most are simple plastic miniatures and paint quick.
18). FOW 20mm Dutch East Indies. Another small collection of 300 miniatures.
19). FOW 20mm Polish…500 miniatures.
20). FOW Hungarian. I have the armor and cavalry but little infantry so incomplete. Say 300 miniatures.
21). FOW 20mm Romanians…like the Polish I guess 500 miniatures.
22). FOW Finnish. Who cannot paint the plucky Finns, especially when ski troops beckon the painting table. Say 300 miniatures.
23). Early FOW 20mm USA 1940 for early Pacific scenarios. Marines and Island defenders plus Philippines.
24). French 20mm for 1940 France. I have the Vichy forces well covered for colonial battles. Another blob for 800 the game master says.
25). FOW 20mm British for NWE theater. I can land at Normandy but thereafter need the miniatures painted to look spot on. Have the North African and Italian East Africa well covered for the Empire.
26). FOW Greeks anyone????? Going once…going twice.
27). To this day I still haven't painted my FOW 20mm German PzGrenadier forces but the German forces have a good mix of basic units painted for scenarios.

28). Then we have the WAB or Clash of Empires Ancients: Many 25/28mm collections have painted playable forces but there are some totally un-started armies like: Goths, Late Roman, Britons, Gauls, Chinese, Post Roman Italian states, and Macedon. What….I haven't painted up Alexander yet? But I do have my Cambodians painted.

There is more but my painting table is summoning me with almost 50 painting years of service. Report for duty command the brushes.

Martin Rapier11 Mar 2025 7:36 a.m. PST

Unplayable? none.
Need some more bits adding? Many.
Have far too many bits? Many.

None – they are merely in progress rather than unfinished.

Not yet able to put on a game;

Epic TYW
20mm Sudan
25mm Marlburian Siege
25mm SYW (bu they ust need rebasing)

Dexter Ward12 Mar 2025 3:46 a.m. PST

Just one; the period I'm currently working on. All the other projects are finished

Captain Pete12 Mar 2025 1:20 p.m. PST

Truthfully, most of my projects are unfinished. Having said that, my 6mm WWII has enough painted stuff to do decent games with British and Germans in North Africa 1942. Russian Front 1942-45. Western Front Americans 1944.

I do have many more unfinished projects either going on or on the horizon. Even with projects that I have plenty of models and terrain for there seems to always be more to do.

Christopher Bump13 Mar 2025 3:19 p.m. PST

I have none that are of interest to me at the present completed. Even the ancients I used to play years ago have boxes of unpainted units that are primed and boxed for another day. I am working on 2 projects currently, but both seem to just continue to grow, perhaps ensuring I will never complete them. I have a third I was really passionate about, but only 1 army is full enough that it could be played with. Alas have not even thought, beyond the occasional daydream of starting the opponents.

cavcrazy14 Mar 2025 1:42 p.m. PST

All of my projects are " In the process of" I have quite a few of those🤪
