" Ali Gomaa raised a state of controversy after he announced on the program he presents on Egypt's First Channel that when the tests were carried out on the body of Ramses II, they found that he died by suffocation. Gomaa also stated that the scientists found seaweed inside his corpse, which indicates that this is the Pharaoh that lived during Moses' era. Can we really know if the corpse of Ramses II belongs to the Pharaoh of Egypt?…" Main page link

Not sure it will help but there is a series about Ramses on Sky History tonight (15th March), starting at 6pm and again at 7pm on the History plus one hour later programme. |

Considering how precarious dating for Egyptian history is I'd be loathe to make any direct association between a historical figure like Ramses II and the Biblical narrative. It is not the I doubt the historical foundation of the Moses story but beyond generalities (ie. there was a Pharaoh involved) what more can we say? |

Thutmoses III seems to work out better from the Biblical intervals and dates we can synch up. That's figuring "Shishak"=Shoshenq I, which is pretty well accepted. That gives you an Exodus date of around 1460 if I remember correctly. Just about impossible to not place it in the XVIII Dynasty. A Ramses II Exodus gives you maybe 150 years for Exodus, Judges and Samuel, and leaves you with real troubles explaining why Philistines don't show up until well into Exodus and iron pretty much not until Saul. Mind you, there are some persistent problems synching C14 tests with dates from any other source in the 15th and 16th Centuries BC Estern Med. I liked the deMille version myself, but still… |
