"We here at We Are the Mighty have been talking about our favorite movie soundtracks. Of particular interest are our favorite songs from war movies. This list was nearly impossible to cull down, because many of the best soundtracks are instrumental compositions (which are great), but don't exactly scream "turn me up!" So we collected a series of songs (many from Vietnam movies) that are sure to either make you sing along, dance, or cry…"

Pretty heavy on Vietnam era movies. I would think that the theme from Saving Private Ryan should be on the list as well as Glory. That's just off the top of my head.

I would imagine "Men of Harlech" as featured in "Zulu" would be in the top 3 of a majority of wargamers' playlists.

+2 Eumelus.

A terrible list. No history happened before I was born, so any list has to be less that 40 years old.

+1 for Harlech, since it's singing and not music.

If individual music and not soundtrack, I like "British grenadiers" from Barry Lyndon. The Bonnie Blue Flag – From – The Horse Soldiers. opening theme outlaw josey wales Among others.

What, no River Kwai or Great Escape? Sorry, I can't take that list seriously…

Garry Owen from multiple westerns, certainly Men of Harlech and I quite liked Joe Strummer's treatment of Minstrel Boy in Blackhawk Down.

Very sloppy list at best, lazy most likely.

The Panzerlied from "The Battle of the Bulge" was rather thrilling.

Yes, die Panzerlied was certainly the highlight of that movie!

Yes, die Panzerlied was certainly the highlight of that movie!

Even if all the newly minted tankers only knew the first verse of their anthem.

Yes, die Panzerlied was certainly the highlight of that movie!

Even if all the newly minted tankers only knew the first verse of their anthem. Shows the terrible level of their training, but at least their morale is high.

Main title from "An Officer and a Gentleman." Not a war movie but it is military.

The music chosen for the OP list would NOT be my top ten. Most of the alternative suggestions are much more suitable.

Yes here is another vote for Burning Bridges. As a kid I waited months for KH to come on TV again so I could tape it with my cassette player, only to have a local news anchor talk all through the song while the credits rolled. Grrrrr.

Good mention of Burning Bridges. I first saw that movie at an outdoor movie theater in Nakon Phanom in either 71 or 72 and still love both the movie and the song.

The march of the Winkie Castle Guards in "The Wizard of Oz" was quite inspiring.

Some songs not already noted: The submariners' song over the opening titles to "The Mackenzie Break" is a rousing German march, and I have a recording of it but it's on another computer and the name escapes me. "Soldiers of the Queen" from "Breaker Morant." "Le Boudin" from "March or Die."

"I'm Dreaming of Home" from "Merry Christmas/Joyeux Noel." "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" over the end credits to "A Midnight Clear." "Vivre et Mourir" from "Mary Queen of Scots" (end titles)

These are all proper songs, not instrumental soundtrack pieces or underscores, which would be a huge new category.

I still choke up each time when Victor Laszlo instructs the band to strike up "La Marseillaise."
