I was in Newark (UK) for the Hammerhead wargames show on March 1 but I also visited the English Civil War centre. Exhibits include the 'hand warmer' for branding deserters, arms and armour and a gallery devoted to Poland's contribution in WW2. YouTube link The town played a pivotal role in the ECW. There is a surviving sconce (earthwork) in a local park while the main church was hit by an incoming roundshot. The last big War of the Roses battle was fought a few miles away at East Stoke. Barry |

There are 3 other surviving sconces in Newark that are still pretty much intact Kelham Island Sconce, Muskham Sconce and Sandhill Sconce. There are also a number of partial remains too. |
