I am currently researching Colonial battles 1800 – 1900 AD for an upcoming supplement of 36 Colonial Battles for a new ruleset in the Dominion of the Spear rules series. Any suggestions for which colonial battles should be included?

Isandlwana and Inyezane. The first a classic attack/defend, the second an attack on a column on the move.

Any of the Maori Wars battles where a small group of light infantry armed with muskets and shotguns fought against regular British army, Royal Navy and Militia forces. Gate Pa or Rangiriri (add Gunboats to the British side). Maori dug in to trenches with rifle pits and bomb proof bunkers.

Laings Nek is interesting and manageable with a splash of colour.

I am carefully noting and looking at all of these suggestions. Many thanks to all!

I second Battle of Batoche and Adowa/Adwa. Further – any of the battles/skirmishes from the Spanish-American War.

The Relief Column advance to Peiking has several actions.
The Philippine Rebellion vs US and earlier actions against Spain.
Pawnee vs Comanche raiders
Early 1800s, Seminole Wars and Creek Wars consist of numerous actions
A number of Filibuster operations post 1849. I covered these in several magazine articles.

I'll mention Tel-el-Kebir, just because nobody else has. It's not necessarily a good game, but it did end the Anglo-Egyptian war, and it was sizable for a colonial battle.

It's also one of only 3 colonial battles I know much about. I'm not a colonial gamer, but as a wargamer it's impossible to not learn about Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. I happen to know a little bit about Tel-el-Kebir (and Kassassin) because I'm a naval gamer obsessed with ironclads, and I read about the Anglo-Egyptian War to get some context on the 1882 bombardment of Alexandria.

I have written up 22 battles so far:

Assaye 1803, Tippecanoe 1811, Graham's Town 1819, Nsamankow 1824, Rama 1824, Macta 1835, Miani 1843, Chillianwala 1849, Chinhat 1857, Agra 1857, Khushab 1857, Palikao 1860, Puebla 1862, Amoaful 1874, Rosebud 1876, Inyezane 1879, Isandlwana 1879, Kandahar 1880, Tamai 1884, Batoche 1885, Lugalo 1891, Adwa 1896, Omdurman 1898.

Just finished Inyezane 1879 having read the fascinating and amusing account of it in a pdf online by Brian Best. Well worth a read!

Battle of Kousseri in Chad in 1900. The whole campaign with various columns descending on Chad from the North, the south, and the west. link
