Hinchliffe produced a range of 25mm "Barsoom" figures in about 1975, based on the old science-fiction adventure books by Edgar Rice Burroughs set on Mars. I had some of these when they first came out; given to me by my older brother.
I lost them over the years. The same older brother just gave me a bag of figures that had been stored away for 50 years. So here they are, painted to the best of my ability and set up to look like they are exploring one of the ruined ancient cities of ancient Mars…excuse me, I mean Barsoom of course.

The figures don't have much detail so they were a challenge to paint. I tried to make the faces look good and eventually gave up. Still, they have a goofy and nostalgic charm for me and I am sure many older gamers would agree. I took pictures of them in a light box, but thought they looked much better being set up on terrain that matched their 1970s wargame aesthetic – some painted felt and repurposed wooden blocks.

Very nicely done! Still many of the old "John Carter of Mars" line in my own forces, but yours are better painted and terrained.

Quite charming.

Great! Protecting Deja Thoris brings back happy memories of adventuring on Mars.

Thanks for sharing. Your painting is excellent and makes the figures look their best. I'm a Hinchliffe fan myself and remember ads for this range even though I never owned any.

Very nice and I echo @Gray Bear – wish I had some!

Read 'The 11 Billion Dollar Year' by Anne Thompson. It has about 5 pages on how The John Carter movie's publicity was totally mismanaged.

Thanks for all the positive feedback! It was fun to finally have some painted Barsoom figures after 50 years. I may have to dig up a copy of the old TSR "Warriors of Mars" rules for battles on Barsoom. They were from the same time period.

And I agree that John Carter was actually a good movie but was advertised poorly!

They look great!

Big fan of both Hinchliffe figures and the John Carter film, but this range somehow didn't come up on my radar way back when so they're missing the nostalgia factor for me.
They do still come up on eBay from time to time but I've got too much to paint already; currently painting some of the Robin Hood range.

I put the John Carter movie on to watch, thinking it would be a ridiculous movie. But it was every bit as good and fun as Conan the Barbarian.
It deserved better. As usual, blame the studio(s).

At last! Another person who agrees with me – the John Carter film was great fun.

Agreed on the movie. It actually did well overseas, where Disney didn't (mis)manage the publicity.

Cost more than it should have, I gather. The producer was ex-Pixar and had never done live action before.

The SPI board game by the legendary Mark Herman has a source guide in it that is worth the price of the game alone.

I used to own these figures and I loved the look of them.

I also thought the John Carter movie was very good.

Another vote for "John Carter' movie. I could even accept turning Dejah Thoris into a modern style heroine.

Great minis and painting. A pity though nobody does 3d minis for Barsoom.

Modiphius does a few 3d minis

Modiphus has potentially more files they could release as the files are the same as the Miniatures they released. I have emailed them about it but no reply. I did pickup a bunch of the former Blackhat 15mm range for them and some of the Peter Pig ones.

Thanks.

John

@John Leahy – Are the 18mm Blackhat Martian figures still available?

Somebody else does have the range. I believe Mark at Scale Creep carries the line in the US too.

Thanks.

I believe RRB Miniatures now has the miniatures. Looks to me that the Green Martians are now called "Sitan Giants" and are part of their Fictioneers line….

The movie was good but prior to the release I saw that the promotion was totally mismanaged, thus it failed in the US.
