I'm 75 years old, so when I was a child & a teenager & even in college, boys were gifted with "War Toys": toy soldiers, forts for them to occupy & plastic or metal toy guns. Girls got toy pots & pans, dolls, model homes for them & make up just like their mothers'. Girls who wanted war toys were deemed "Tom Boys" & you can guess what label was given to boys who wanted toys designed for the girls. I'm gratified that our current era is more liberal. I have a cousin who was a definite "Tom Boy" & who usually kicked my rear in any "War" game that we played. |
