link It has been a while since I have painted tartan and so it is with some trepidation that I have started on a small unit of Fraser's Highlanders (78th Foot) circa 1759. The step by step process is described (with pics) on my blog. link |

Nice job. But you can go nuts "researching" Fraser's. The Company of Military Historians shows them in a brown-ish tartan, something like this. link That's how I painted mine many years ago. But… Seeing the above photo, it might have been a take on the red. 🤷 I think you were ultimately correct to settle in the Government sett. And you did it well. |

Maybe I missed it – but what figures are you using? |

I've always used artists watercolors for thin striping on tartans. Because of their dense pigmentation, you can thin them down to the point where you can lay down a hair-thin line without losing opacity. BTW, the dense pigmentation is why artists watercolors cost more than other water-based paints. |

I forgot to mention the figures are 25mm RAFM Cheers, Simon |

LOL – knew I recognized those figures. RAFM make a great FIW/SYW line – true 25mm. |

Excellent work! I recognized those vintage RAFMs. I have several among my Jacobite rebellion units, on both sides. I lost some to lead rot, tho, so keep an eye open but if you got a bad batch, they'd have probably already shown the signs by now. Tartan is a challenge but also a skill. The process you've hit upon is very much like what I do.

Nice figs! The RAFM Highlanders are good figures. I've got about 7 battalions of them! |
