I decided to put my wasted life of reading Flashman novels and watching black powder revolver and sabre videos on YT to a practical purpose and I have authored a set of RPG / small skirmish rules for the period 1855 – 1865.

The rules are called "Carbine, Colt & Tulwar".

The rules allow the gamer to create his own characters and take them through detailed scenarios with sword duels and pistol shoot outs.

There are specifics about how to create your character's background and enhance his – or her – skills.

And there are very detailed and specific rules about firearm types and their positive and negative characteristics. (If you ever wanted a rule set that allowed you to choose between an Adams or a Colt revolver for your hero and emphasized their respective abilities, this is the set for you!)

I am doing final proof readings of the playtest draft and would love to get some feedback on the set. The rules are quite hefty – over 80 pages. But I think they "put you in the middle of the action" as well or better than any set I have come across.

Please DM me or put your email in the comments and I will email the set out in a few days when I have fussed over the final proof enough to feel happy to let others read it!

Thanks!

The rules also cover ACW scenarios, French Intervention in Mexico and Victorian civilian shootouts in North America and Europe and can be updated to the 1880's and back dated to the 1830's and 1840's.

huevans, that sounds like a great project! I let my longterm paid membership lapse a while ago, but just renewed it. When it's processed I'll send you a DM with my email address. I was happy to read your follow-up post, as I think it's a very good idea to cover a bit longer span, such as the 50 years from 1837 (crowning of Queen Victoria) to 1887 (year the Martini-Henry was replaced by the Lee-Metford).

Hi Mad Guru.

I didn't realize that you had to pay to get DM privileges.

You can email me directly at huevans@hotmail.com

A guy who know when the M-H was replaced by the Lee-Metford. You sound like exactly my kind of guy!

Yes, the rules already have back-date and up-date sections and the update section goes to……. when the Martini-Henry was replaced by more modern weapons.

The back-date is easy. You just throw out all the stuff relating to breech-loaders, revolvers and most of the rifled shoulder arms and voila!!!

huevans, thanks, it's very kind of you to post your email address! I did pay for my premiere membership right after posting my above comment, back on Sunday, but it still has yet to be processed, so getting your direct contact this way was helpful. I look forward to receiving your rules and hopefully having a chance to do some play-testing in the not-so-distant future!

You might consider sliding the date up to the 1940. You get the Mexican-American war and the era of Filibuster efforts in Cuba, Nicaragua and Mexico.
Back in the 1980s we did a set of skirmish rules called Glory! (before the movie was made)
A lot of variety of weapons can be grouped together for easier classification.

My rules are pretty specific to the sabre duel era….
