I bought a couple of Historex Belgic shakos with cover and they came with a separate plume wrapped up! Kind of looks like a sausage with a bowtie on one end. Does anyone know where the British infantryman carried this item? Was it like the French flankers who carried theirs on their sabre/bayonet case? |

Was there a loop *inside* the shako top that could secure the plume and keep it out of the weather, etc? I've read of similar things in French shakos that were used for plumes, silverware, etc. |

piper909: It appears to be an external storage device. |

The Charles Hamilton Smith print of The 1st Regt. of Foot Guards shows a sergeant and a private on the march, wearing greatcoats and covers on their shakos. The plumes are worn, but are enclosed in a tube like that you describe. |

arthur1815: Tanks! It looks like troops had the option to leave the plume on and had a separate little bag to protect it! How clever! Then pictures of the troops without the plume, with covered shakos, may have simply stored it on top of their heads in the space in the shako! I was going to attach it to the side of the backpack! This saves me considerable embarrassment! (Not that my immediate group would ever mind…) |
