Hi (and please excuse me posting in English – my Italian is, I'm afraid, non-existent). Does anyone have any information on the size and organisation of the Bande Nere? What sort of units did it contain and how were they armed? Also, whilst in the service of France, I understand they fought alongside Landsknecht units in French pay – did these include the German "Black Band"? |

I think the term "Black Band" was often randomly assigned to various mercenary units. I think the landsknecht black band you are thinking of, were called that because they took French pay in direct contravention of the orders of the emperor. I can't remember where I read that, it was a while ago. Maybe Taylor? In terms of Giovannis Black Band, you need to go online and search for - The Black Bands of Giovanni – Maurizio Arfaioli You should be able to download it for free. This is primarily about the campaign in Naples after Giovannis death. It talks about the troop types and balance of forces, in terms of their engagement by Florence. It will answer some of your questions, but not all I'm afraid. |
