I really need your help. In the battle of Madonna dell'Olmo 30th September 1744 I found 2 different sources stating that at the defence of the church there were 3 battalions of Grenaderos Provinciales, not considered as combined Grenadiers from their regiments but as authonomous units. Firstly I thought in this way (even though it sounded weird) but then I found this
I was wondering how it is possible that they all wore the same uniforms even if they came from different regiments, or maybe they were authonomous units. I don't know. Any HELP? thanks

Not in period, I'm afraid. They exist clear through the Napoleonic Wars--nominally militia, but on continuous active duty, and no connection with the various militia musketeer battalions. Reasoning from that, I'd expect one uniform per province, but reason doesn't carry you very far in uniformology. |

Albeit for the Napoleonic period, yes they were independent units and wearing the same uniform. As Robert states, in times of war the provincial grenadiers were embodied to serve for the period of war or emergency. Except when there were cloth shortages, their uniforms were similar to the regulars with the provincial facings. Ref; Osprey MAA 321, Vol 1 Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars, p. 35. |
