In this the second part to my post looking at the collection held by the Darwin Military Museum at East Point, Darwin, Australia, I focus on the militaria and other weapons displayed in the various ex-utility buildings that are on site at the former 9.2-inch coastal battery complex.
The museum, through a combination of models together with some rather unique displays of military equipment and weapons, shows the range of military campaigns that Australian service personnel have been involved in since WWI along with their allies.
The exhibition is completed with one of the 9.2-inch gun emplacements restored to show how it might have looked in WWII as part of the harbour defences against Japanese attack.

Excellent report again, JJ. I was quite surprised, as the museum's grown a lot since I was last there (2010 or so). It looks like they've managed to collect a few exhibits from Larrakeyah, as well, as a couple of the weapons look like ones that were on the SGT Mess (aka "Snake Pit") bar wall. It's good a wider audience will see them. |

Hi Dal G, Great, thank you. It's been an interesting challenge to translate their collection to the post as the site is quite spread out with stuff all over the place and some seemingly placed in a haphazard kind of a way, but its well worth taking the time to have a good look, as they really have some unique and very interesting items in the collection, not to mention the history relating to the site as well. I hope others visiting Darwin with a similar interest will take the time to visit as it is important to support these venues. Cheers JJ |
