Do you:
Ignore these rulesets when playing solo, convert the rulesets to IGOUGO, create a bot to play against, or mentally bifurcate?

One of my other personalities plays one side and I play the other.

Doesn't everybody do that?

fgilbert230 Jan 2025 9:27 a.m. PST

I barely have one personality, let alone two lol

I agree.

I feel your pain. One approach might be to draw up several battle plans for each side and then randomly choose which you use. As for moving you might start at, say, the left of each army and move one unit/brigade at a time and see where yo end up. You could also also randomize your responses to yourself.

Multiple personalities really would help!

It's one reason I'm partial to card draw or the Mersey rules' rapidly changing initiative for solo play. Very quickly having a pland for each side matters less than which of me is moving.

Hmm. I'm assuming "spontaneous movement" is what I've normally heard called "simultaneous movement." If the troops start moving spontaneously--well, it takes me out of the loop, but it might be a lot of fun to watch.

Normally I would call it simultaneous movement too. I guess I can't tell my aneouses from a hole in the ground.

Come up with an "intelligent" randomizer system, based on the nature of the unit, the terrain, objectives, goals, tactical situation, etc., and of course the game mechanics.

Herkybird of TMP has an excellent example of this in his solo Wings or Glory system. It basically sets up a weighted die roll for the enemy movement based on the last move and the relative position of the enemy and the closest potential target for the "AI" plane. The system may occasionally produce a less optimal result, but it tends to produce a reasonable one— the plane doesn't suddenly make an Immelmann when it's on a target's six!

Usually, I VLB it or adapt something which resembles a THW game with various 'reactions'.
