…Art of Leadership

"The war of 1809 between France and Habsburg Austria, culminating in the titanic battle of Wagram, has been described often as Napoleon's last successful campaign. Napoleon said later that the manoeuvres and actions of the French army and their German allies in the opening two weeks of this conflict were among the most brilliant and skilful of his entire career. But matters might have gone very differently. A series of miscalculations, mistakes and poor communications, both prior to Austria's declaration of war and in the early days of hostilities, might have resulted in a major setback, if not a disaster, for the French Emperor. That they did not is due in large part to the decisions and actions of Marshal Louis Davout, the so-called "Iron Marshall"…"

1798 and the French Invasion of Ireland: An Eyewitness Account by Louis Octave Fontaine

"The French invaded Ireland in 1798. General Humbert landed just over a thousand men in County Mayo in August, coming ashore in a land that was still reeling from an abortive rebellion against British rule. Deprived of reinforcements, and always struggling for supplies, Humbert nevertheless launched his little expeditionary force into the fray, defeating the British at Killala, Ballina and then Castlebar before succumbing to superior forces at Ballinamuck that September. His French troops surrendered and were eventually shipped back to France but those Irish who had joined him in this last great gamble of the Irish revolution were mercilessly cut or hunted down…"

Resolute, tough, loyal, and brilliant.

Armand! Have a heart! I still have a hill of books still to read. LOL

Just spotted that the 1798 title consists of only 42 pages, so not a long read. But it is also only available via kindle at the moment so it might never become available in print form. Phew!

It would be interesting to know how Sullivan's book compares to Gallaher's The Iron Marshal? I've added it to my 'to-buy-at-some- point' list but I've not been able to find any reviews, as yet.

Agreed that he is the man! Love Davout – great commander and not someone who hung around court to suck up and someone who didn't try to cover up his bad vision but wore glasses; not proud, not vain and he took great care of his people – also agree would be good to compare this to Gallagher's book, which I have

Armand, no worries. It is always great to see new titles. My hill of books yet to read and my list of books yet to buy, will probably always be there, which, is much better than there being no more titles to desire. Just need to pick the correct lottery numbers for once!

the most overrated marshal not better than Lannes, Soult, Bernadotte, Massena, Suchet, St. – Cyr,his performance, as to quote Alexander Mikaberidze in 1812 was underwhelming, and this continues till the end in 1815
